In Factorio: Space Age, maintaining a stable industrial base requires careful resource management, particularly ensuring adequate bioflux production for copper processing, managing spoilage through nutrient loops, and implementing alarm systems to monitor critical resource thresholds like calcite levels, as demonstrated through the Gleba Hexagon Base retrospective.

Factorio Space Age: Gleba Retrospective – How the Hexagon Base Really Works
Added:Evening and all. Welcome back to the channel. So, we're going to close the Gleber base uh with a retrospective.
We're going to look at what's working, what isn't working. The blueprint is available. If you would like the blueprint, then uh go to the description, come to Discord, pest me in any way you can. And if you see me in the street, walk up to me and grab me by the collar and say, "Give me the blueprint." And everyone around me will be like, "What's going on here?" Anyway, so much like dating your sister, this base has been ultimately quite a challenge, taken an awful long time, and in the end, it was a slightly disappointing journey. I'm joking. It was lovely. I I love this base. Um, it's a bit of a problem, though. again like your sister.
It's a bit of a problem. Um, she keeps calling. Seriously, dude, just sort it out. Anyway, right. So, talking nonsense. The the issue stems from the fact that it's about as stable as your mom. And we need to find a way to make it a bit more stable. Um, the issue is power. So, we're still cheating and using nuclear power. The horror. The horror. And so, we've got to think of a way to make this a bit better. I think what's needed is better quality modules, better quality everything. Um, I think this will then mean that we make fuel quicker. I mean, what's happened here? I can see there's already an issue here.
We're just not Oh, there you go. We're just not getting things quick enough.
So, what I thought I'd do is we'll do a little retrospective of each sort of cell. talk about if it's worth um tweaking, adding a bit to so that if you want to use these blueprints, then um you at least know where there's maybe some frailties.
And frailties is a good word. Uh this one, this one's fine. Nothing to worry about here. As long as you set everything up, then you'll have no problem with making coal, uh explosives, dynamite, um rockets, and shells. Just remember to import tungsten bar.
Everything there works pretty well. Now, this one is a problem. This is copper.
Copper uh it's uh it's not great. And the main reason is bioflux. So, the issue we have on this base, I'm just going to point it out. Boflux is there and Boflux is here. So, really, it needs another Boflux factory here. However, the Sea of Gleber, ignore that, that doesn't exist. The Sea of Gleber is stopping that happening. So, um, we've had to sort of jerryrig something which is kind of like a a sort of simple quick Heath Robinson base which just creates bio flux. Um, I'm not happy with it because we don't have a lot of yumato processing. So, it's h just Yeah. So, if you do build this, have a consideration of whether or not you're going to have enough boflux to keep it going. It's getting better if I just hover. So, look, I mean, it's definitely it's improving. Um but the reason this is so important is when you come to the uh low density structures you can see copper is constantly low. So uh bit of an issue. So I mean we might have to put some productivity modules in this. I avoided doing that cuz I didn't really want to. Anyway, so copper works. It's quite good. I would say there is a bit of an issue with it. Right. Let's talk about the next thing that I've been doing. So power is obviously something that is driving me slowly insane in the membrane. But let me show you what one of the things I'm trying to do to um to sort that is where we have obviously our nutrient loop dispensing part. What I've and and again in the process of making um copper and iron we use a lot of spoilage. Wow, that is a lot of spoilage actually. Wow. Okay. So we might have a bit of an issue here. So anyway um spoilage is a bit of an issue. So you can fuel some uh cooling towers and you can then run some turbines off them. I know it's not much but it's okay. And I think that is again is this one not working? Ah see there is this issue here. If there's just not enough spoilage then you do have this issue. We may need to bridge. We don't need that anymore. So maybe it's a bit messy but let's try it. And it it just helps. I think doing this seems to help a little smidge here and there. Although that's not producing any power because that's locked at 500 anyway. So you can see I'm trying to sort of find a way to make it so I don't need the the additional nuclear power.
Obviously I could just have more fuel production, more turbines, etc., etc. So that might be what we do um to solve this because we've only got the one turbine block or hex. um it works but it's not not great um terms of power production um almost well a vast majority of it is still coming from the nuclear power. So what I think I would probably look to do is once these stone patches are well that one actually it's done. Oh my days right that's a problem. So we're running out of stone all the time. We probably need to venture east or sorry, west on this to uh to build more um hexagons. I think we're just going to end up making masses amount of fuel production. Um there's quite a bit of land here that we can use to grow. The only problem is going to be jelly nut cuz there's not a huge amount of that. So it's just a bit of a challenge. It's just constantly trying to find and plus we're about to go to a quo where fision or fusion reactors are going to be a thing. So maybe we don't bother. Maybe we just wait for fusion reactors. I think that's probably what we'll end up doing. But as you can see, like these kind of sort of very simply rigged up systems. Um they can help um because it's just kind of keeping the engine running. In fact, look at that. We've actually maxed. So that's good cuz we've done a little bit of a spur off this one as well. So logic here is if that is not got X, therefore don't give that. And it sort of works quite well. Anyway, so that's copper.
The copper works, but again, put it near a Boflux um factory, you'll be you'll be crystal golden lovely. Um concrete production, everything work fine here.
Again, please let me know if you had any issues. The only issue really is just um getting enough stone to be honest. Um we are doing quite a bit of landfill. I'm just going to cap these cuz the reality, oh well, we don't we're always needing it. um when we start to do our concrete cuz you can see we've done concrete in the the main area. It looks quite nice, I think. But um I do want to concrete the centers to a degree as well because that will then look lovely. So to just to do that is going to take thousands of units of landfill.
So I'm kind of holding off doing it at the moment. But everything else um I'd say it kind of works. Although looking at our factory, yeah, we've still got an issue of iron. Oh, we haven't got water there. There you go. See? See? No one posted in the comment to say, "Oi, that don't work, dudes." Oh, no. Hang on.
What am I doing? I can see already we've got I have just misplaced that bouch. Right.
But we don't have iron. So, where is the iron?
Uh, iron. Where's iron? Oh, here. What am I talking about? Right. So, iron is still a bit of an issue. Right. So, we'll come to look at that. So, again, it's not perfect. There's something not right with that one. In fact, talking of iron, this is the issue. So, because we have our iron train here, um, it's not get it's never getting enough iron to it. And here we have the issue where feeding Boflux through drone, it's just not a good idea. So, if I was going to think of a more logical way to do it, we would copy what we did here and we would have a mini factory.
Um, we probably could do this because Boflux, oh, it's actually being delivered by drone, right? So, that's a real weakness in this system actually.
Just realizing that that is this is not great. Um, jelly nut is being delivered there. Probably what we do is we need a yumato train here and then we can make boflux locally. I think we probably will do that. Um, just wondering if we should do that now. No, I'll leave that. But that'll be something to this again. you you only see the frailties once it's run for a while. Like I'm genuinely quite surprised I never spotted that cuz you can see the drone. There's so many drones. And I don't like that they're just constantly delivering boflux. So I think that's going to be my kind of drive is to make it so that we have much more local production cuz I would love to to switch off the drone connectors at some point. That way we don't have to Oh, let's just get rid of all that. That way we don't have to um you know have just thousands of drones running because it's a bit annoying I must admit.
Anyway, right on to the next one. Um we have not yet unlocked research that allows us to fill out this. So once we do um will be crystal golden crystal. In fact, we probably could cuz there is quite a bit of the soil there that we could use. Um I think the issue is we already have enough. Yeah. So, oh no, not really actually. H I think we might do that. The issue then becomes we have to deal with the spoilage, but I think that's okay. Um, yeah, I think we're going to do that. So, let's just see if we start placing. So, we've got one there and we've got probably one there.
We even have the soy. So, it's not masses amount. It's It's fine. I think if we get rid of that, we should be good, right? And that gives us that gives us quite a bit. So I'm quite pleased with that. I think if we get rid of all of this. Is there any more? No.
So that's that one. As you can see, we need that research just to unlock everything.
Right. Let's just get rid of all the detritus.
That's it. Glebra is a funny place. I do love it. Like there's something very beautiful about this hellish world, but there it is. It's quite hard on you. I must admit it's it can be challenging.
Right. There we go. Look at that tree in the way. Good lord. Um so I think one two there we go. So that at least starts the production. I mean again once that research is done I think we get a lot more. We'll get at least that. Not a huge amount I guess but oh well. It's just unlucky the placement didn't land perfectly but never mind. And it gives us something.
Gosh. Not a lot actually. Yeah, not much. And I think even there we've only got eight. Is it? No, seven. It's not great. What have we got here? Oh, there's a a bit more there. So, maybe we do one there as well.
Let's just Again, the beauty of the modular design is you can just plug it all in. Okay, it's not a huge amount.
Let's just get rid of all this. Yeah, not a huge amount. Oh well.
I think here as well. Let's just plug them all in. Plug them all in. So, one and two. One and two. And let's just plug those in. Yeah, it's not great, but again, every little helps, as Bob Hoskins once said in a weird Asda advert before he patted his bottom. I know, random, right? But that's exactly what happened. I am talking verbatim, right?
Um, let's send let's send these this way.
And let's just then plug them into here.
There we go.
Uh, that's plugged in. That's plugged in. So, I mean, it's not great, but it'll do it. It's just every little helps, unfortunately, with these things.
Anyway, we'll come back to these cuz I could spend forever in a day farming. I have become L farmer. Right. Let's just sort this out cuz that looks a bit poop.
There we go. Right. So, on to our fuel production. Not a lot really here. Here we can do we have obviously boflux being delivered by the train which is important. I do limit them just so we have a more regular throughput bit like your dad. Um and what I'm trying to do is just keep it so that um this one's constantly running.
However, this is the issue. It needs a con it needs better modules basically.
Um what it's producing at the moment is quite good because it's producing a fair bit of fuel. Interesting. Interesting.
Interesting. That's never happened before. Ever. Ever.
That is exciting, interesting, illuminating, and perplexing. A conundra, if you will, because I've never seen do that before. It's always burnt faster than it um receives. So, this is good. This is incredibly good.
So, it might be that we've reached a pivot, a pivot point. Um maybe because of nuclear power. Maybe, maybe, maybe.
Um or maybe not. I don't know. So, interesting. We'll keep an eye on that.
Um, I would probably say don't build this because it looks good, but it's utter jibber. It's nonsense. Um, I would say don't build this because it's not very good. I mean, I think is it running on full steam? Oh, it is. Maybe I'm wrong. See, that one isn't. There's no steam there. No steam there. So, it ends about there.
Oh, dear me. When I get fusion power, everything changes. Um, this is the terminus. At the moment, it's not quite finished, but it's fine for now. I would say with every terminus you have, the mission is really, do you have an ability to have rockets supplied constantly? So, this is the you blue chips, the LDS's, and fuel. Well, I would say we have that now, which is great. I mean, Gleber glue, I don't think we're actually import Oh gosh, look at that. That's disaster, isn't it?
So, we'll get to that. I think our science is just not working. I think our full Gora base is failing us as well.
Let's have a quick look. I I know I've deviated slightly, but I think this is jammed. Oh, it's just constantly. So, one of the things we have to do have to right is because this is jammed.
Oh, deary deary me. This is disast. I don't even know where to begin to fix that. This base is utter jibber. I think I will probably, you know, pull an allnighter and rebuild this base entirely. I think the bandit idea was nice. I think I'd rather go for something a bit more sort of interesting. I forgot to build that.
There you go. Um, I think it just needs some work. And you can see we're not researching anything and we're wasting all of our time on glibar because we're we're not able to research anything. So, all of our research is just rotting away. I whoever made Gleber Science decay, I want to smack him in the bottom because like that is just depressingly depressing. Um, so I don't really know what to to do about that. I think probably um well, yeah, it's it's a tricky one that it's that's not an easy fix because all of these are completely jammed. Um I think the only thing I can think of is to do this. Let's see if we can actually do that. and we just build. Is it gonna let me do it?
Oh, yeah. Probably could do that. There we go. There we go. That sort of works.
Um, and the only way to sort of get it moving is uh let's do slight aside. Apologies for this, but you can see the pressure on this poor base is just ridiculous.
Right. And I have to use the right ones otherwise it won't work. There we go.
So, at least that should start the base rolling again. Oh my days. The things we have to do. The things we have to do, right? Boflux.
Boflux kind of works. I think my biggest mistake was making it one when I should have made it one and two. So, two on each side. Um, never mind. Never mind.
Your lives and your learns. You learn from your mistakes. That is life. Oh, look. We do have some useful power production. I'm going to try and put another one on that. Let's see if that works. Seems to, doesn't it? It looks like What is the ratio? Someone post in the in the comments the ratio. I would be curious to know this. B. There we go.
It looks as if it can run five. Is that going to take too much heat, do you think? Looks fine. Uh, let's see if we can just put another one there.
I know it looks awful, but I don't care at this stage. Power is power. I need it. I need it.
B. There we go. So anything that helps I mean I think that's why we have a power deficit um generally generally is we just not enough not enough turbines basically whereas now if we sort of keep putting them in everywhere that there is some sort of burning so you can see here we have one there. So again let's just b couple more there. I don't know if it'll hold because I don't know what the ratio is. I remember hearing somebody say one of these to seven of those but that seems a lot. So, I'm sure it's not seven, but if it is, post the comments.
Let me know. Your wisdom would be appreciated. But that looks like it maybe is working, but let's keep an eye on it. But it helps. Um, I think again that does benefit. So, you can see we're still tweaking and gosh, we'll be tweaking forever, right? So, this one I think will be an entirety once we get the research that unlocks the next level of soil upgrade. Um, all of that will be done. So, Yumato, we'll have to think of train station. So, it might be that we have to do something here or something.
I don't know. But I'm pretty pleased with that one. So, I'm not going to mess with that one whatsoever. This is actually a vacant cell at the moment. We may do something with this one because it is very near this and it's very near that. So, I think we could do another Boflux. In fact, probably should do another Boflux um factory there. But for now, let's not worry too much about it. We got a train that's run out of power. Honestly, really? Really? You really ran out of power?
Well, that's disappointing. Let's see.
Can I take some of your fuel?
Are you going to place it within the thing?
Maybe. Oh my gosh. Isn't it Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?
Well, put it in there. What are you doing?
There we go. Oh, come on. Why you What's your problem?
Just put the fuel in there. Oh, days.
More days.
The things we have to do, eh?
Come on. Come on. Place the fuel within the locomotive. Right. Why is this interestingly? Fuel stop 4. Yeah. Go fuel stop four then. Oh, do you know what? I give up. As the base grows and becomes rather weighty like your mom, um I'm always quite concerned at how much manual effort it takes to keep it going.
And given that the whole point of this game is automation, it demonstrates I'm not very good at this game.
And I like to think, you know, there's probably I mean, why did that train run out of field? Is it just stood Oh, do you know why? I know why. It's cuz it's been sat here for way too long. Oh, no, it hasn't.
I can't work it out. Like genuinely. I mean, why are they running out of fuel?
Oh, right. Is it because there's a TR?
Yes.
Yes. Why is What? Oh, is a train on its way. Oh my days. Right. You see the the trouble and strain we have. Um, blue chips. Everything's fine. We're not producing enough green. So, that's something to have a quick goosey gander at. But, in fact, do we have green? Oh, yes, we do. So, we'll go and have a look at green in a moment. Um, which one's there? sulfur. I think this works quite well actually. I don't have really any issues with this one. We have um spoilage being created. So, I think that's worked quite well. In fact, work very well. Using nutrients to do spoilage is a really good idea actually.
I should have done that more often. Um I don't think we actually use that one.
What's delivered there then? Oh, boflux.
Right. Okay. So, and that produces sulfur. Okay. So, that's kind of working as I look here.
Um, yeah, I think that's kind of I was going to replace that with a heat tower, but I think I won't do that now. Yeah, I think it works. Post in the comments if you've had issues with the sulfur. To me, I think that one works quite well. I don't think there's much you can upgrade there. Uh, carbon again, same. I don't think there's too much issues here. We are producing spoilage.
Um, it's being delivered. The nutrient loop seems to work because it's now a heating loop. We probably could put a um a what's it debris watsit one of these.
Let's see if we can mouch.
We need water. Need some water. Or is it they say in the the the stranger parts of our country? Water. Bottle of water.
Get told off for saying things like that. Right. Uh let's see. So, can I turn you around? No.
Turn you around. Turn you around.
There we go. Don't think that worked, but it'll do. Right. Plug you in. One, two, three, four, five.
Huzzah. And then we have further power production of what? 1 2 3 4 5. It seems to work. Seems to work. Again, whether or not it will sustain it, we shall see.
But we have one we could do the other way as well. So, let me just paste.
I don't know if that fits. Actually, does it just fit? Yeah, it just just fits. There we go.
I think that's in the way. So, we could probably just again I know it's not beautiful. I care about this anymore because we just need power.
That seems to not Oh, we haven't put our water pump.
Uh, can I do it there? Yes, I think I can. Nice. Huzzah. Huzzah. So that again just helps, doesn't it? And again, I think that will probably be quite sub, you know, substantial. That will work quite well. Let's keep our little review going. So if I run to green chips, I think this is actually probably one of my better green chip production plants.
I think I might even replicate this if I just do like that.
And let's just put that into a blur print. So not the ship. Not the ship.
Let's just delete these.
Not the ship. I don't think I need that one. Don't think I need the train. There we go. So, that one.
I think it's not a bad green chip production. It's not great, but it it's just simple. And I think this is what we're missing. So, I'm just going to get rid of that. Get rid of that. Doop.
Uh. Don't need any of this. I think this is kind of what I'm missing on now. This is because we went with something a bit sort of weird. And I think having a more standardized get rid of the teleporter as well, I think is quite a good idea.
So, let's just save that and let's just have a quick goosey gander at let's put it into our folder because I think that's how we do it.
Let's look at now V because if that dragon now this go to our blueprint if we could place this somewhere.
See, it's a bit It's a bit long. It's a bit long, but we could see it's that that's what I want to try and do. If I just demonstrate like that. That's kind of the plan. If we could just do might even place that.
Let's place that. We'll come back to that. So, that that could be the beginnings of another sort of um green chip plant. Um, I do have an absolutely corking green chip plant, but it's in the Nv City block book. This is godly.
So, yeah, we'll come back to that.
Available at all good blueprint stockists now. Go and get it. Join the Discord. Pest to me, whatever. Um, the red chips. I think this works quite well as well. So, again, nice and simple.
Can't really see anything too problematic with that. We could even double that up actually, but to be honest, we make more red chips than we use, so what's the point? Let's keep going. Um, I think we then on to this is the tricky bit. So, uh, this is the one that if all power fails, you've got a huge problem. And believe me, it keeps happening. Um, because the eggs hatch, everything gets shot. It just ends badly. And it's a bit of a I feel like this is on a knife edge at all times because we're creating a lot of science.
And we've now moved to a different um storage system now, which is we will only ever keep I can't remember how much is it 7,000 something like that. And so when this hits that tipping point, it will get rid of the spoiled first. So any So basically, it's keeping this box fresh and then anything on the belt. This is the problem. I wish it wouldn't actually release the belt. Oh no, what are we low on? See, low density structures again are screwing us. We need to sort that out. Anyway, right. Uh we'll come back to that. So, anything else is then being destroyed, which is just devastating when you think how hard it is to make this science. But anyway, um everything else I'd say works quite well. So, we've got um a plastic bit. Ignore that. That shouldn't really be there. But for now, it is. But everything else I would say is working relatively well. Um we could totally do this here as well.
kind of fits.
Let's just do it. There we go. Uh, four is fine. I'm okay with four. And then b.
So again, that Oh, hang on. We need water pump again. Every little helps.
So, let's place it. Uh, let's place it there. I quite like how that looks.
And place it there.
So, we'll let them place. So, that kind of works. Let's just get rid of that.
Again, it all helps if we just keep landfill use down. Boo. Nice. Right. So, I think this kind of works. I'm going to stick with it, but I think we will redesign the science at some point. I mean, low density structures is killing us. Do you know what it is? It's that bleeding copper problem.
See? So, I think we have to make a bit of a call now because copper is just not working. And we've got five trains that need it. And that's a huge problem. Or four, actually, cuz we've got one at the base that we don't really need to worry too much about.
And what do we ah interesting. So, it's not actually a supply problem anymore. It is a calite problem. Right. So, we need to There you go. So it every time every time. So if calcite equals nada or there we go and then calcite should be greater or equal than 500.
Good lord how interesting that it's taken me that long to realize that that's the problem. But you see you see the juggling balls again thinking of your mom. When you juggle balls, it's just constantly in your face and one's going to land right in your face and you know exactly what I'm doing there. So, I think this is a wonderful example of I thought it was copper production, but I can see actually we've produced a huge amount. So, there we go. Calite. We were running low on calite. So, this is where again I would like to do something.
Let's just build this because I think this is something long overdue. So, if I just come and build another factory there. What I want to build is the alarms because I'm not I may be already building them, but I don't think I Oh, yes, I am. Never mind. So, we can get rid of that. So, we are building the alarm. So, what we need to do is um put an alarm here that just says I'm just going to put it there because we can then wire. Oops. Wire again. Wire the right one. Let's just move that. Where do we have power? Let's just put it there.
So, what we want is this thing to say, "Oi, you've run out of cows so because that is a problem." So, when There we go.
I will probably switch that off cuz that's annoying. Uh, there we go. Right. So, that is exactly the sort of thing we need because we then need to see Oh, okay. We got problem with calculate. This is how you should wire your base because I can only tell you now without it you're going to have, right? So, we won't leave now until we have calite greater than 500.
500. Boo. There we go. So, that's good.
And I think yes, we do have an awful lot of calite. So, I think that's pretty good. Again, frustrating.
Frustrating that we can't just um get enough there. But there we go. So, that'll probably solve that. Again, that's a huge issue that I mean, no rockets launching. I mean, it's just amazing how such a small thing can really really hamper you. Uh, carbon fiber was completely blocked. Um, issue being we were just not making enough yumato. So, we were not there was not enough mash. So, now that we've fixed that, I think we're good. I'm just going to double check. Oh, yes, we could here as well.
So, let's just put in our little um uh let's see. Is there a better way to do it?
Wonder if we could do something a bit more interesting. H. Well, we'll come back to that. Maybe something like that.
That might work. Uh, oh, no, we'll come back to that because you can see here. I mean, definitely there as well. We could just even if we do a sort of small one and then just b that kind of works. Uh, let's build again. Lots and lots of pumps on this one. One, two, three, four, five.
There we go. So, that just helps.
Again, I don't know if we'll get all of them in, but let's just try it. And there we go. I mean, it's just amazing how really every little helps. So, I'm just going to probably build.
Same again here. So, copy, copy.
Let's flip that around.
But won't let me do that. Never mind. B and b and b again. It doesn't look great, but for now, we just need the we need it. My goodness, we need it. Uh let's see. So, there we go.
B. Nice. So, that again, it just helps like we've probably put in another 20 turbines there. So it just takes this sort of you know problem away from the central fuel production and just adds it to where we are actually making free heat is free real estate. Um and the very last one just to finish a very long elongated retrospective of this GABA base is the uh final boflux. I don't know why I built it here. I'm stupid.
I'm very stupid because we shouldn't have had it here. It's too far away. Um because what drones are doing is flying from here to here to pick up by flux to take you back here. It's dumb, stupid, stupid, dumb, and stupid. Should never have done it. Um, oh, hello. Have we ran out? Oh, okay. So, we do have an issue.
Yeah, we've run we've got a bit of an issue with spoilage and seeds. So, that's probably the next thing to solve.
Let's just head back. Whoop. Um, and I can tell now that we are definitely going to have an issue with uh spoilage and seeds. Now, we should be producing.
Let's just unplug that. There we go. I mean, it doesn't solve the problem massively, but at least it gets the ball rolling. So, that should solve some of that. But there we go. So, Gleber base, the blueprint is available uh somewhere there. So, I should probably put the ribbon world book somewhere there. There we go. So, everything you've seen today is available um in this blueprint book.
It's not the prettiest book. I'm sure others do it better than mwah, but again, if you want to build the space, come get it and give it a go. I hope you enjoyed that. We'll see you hopefully next time not on Gibber.
