The video uses royal pageantry to give academic innovation a sense of national destiny, though the "secret" label is clearly just a marketing hook. It is a sophisticated exercise in institutional branding that attempts to keep the monarchy relevant through the lens of high-tech progress.

Thank you so much.
It's a good one.
Yes.
>> Yes.
So this is the major laboratory and the tea table where a lot of great ideas happen and so we built a whole building around the tea table which goes from the garden terrace through where you have ideas on board and there's a direct line of sight that takes us through the work to the test facilities. It's all sort of built in one one these are literally this is a facility you come through here this facility >> there on the left of the So together we call it a flexible air supply all in all in one place. And one of the keys to making it go fast.
This is is the Trenx WB engine that flies on the Airbus A350.
And this is the flight test one. You can tell by all the orange wires. And what we've done is we put a window in. So it's a great symbol of what the UK can do.
This is after two seconds.
There you go.
That's why this So guys, you're all in the way.
you see is of the traditional vision like you see downstairs so much. So on this engine so sir when you do one this this particular mission we did lots of other technologies came out of it one particular technology which is quite incredible they're going to tell you about now and Dr. Chris Clark and James will tell you about this project to understand it. We need to have a look at a convention. So this is a compressor and to get efficiency what we need is pressure. We do that. But if we wanted to miniaturaturize this say at 100 flow rate start looking like this. But these blades are a bit silly. They're a bit small and the efficiency performance. Yeah. Now our new machine generates that pressurized in a different way. Rather than putting multiple rows, it passes the flow around the toid passing through the same set of rows multiple times. In doing so, this one rose disc provides the pressure rise that these multiple rows perform in a conventional machine. It does it whilst keeping the blades large and hence the efficiency high which means we can experience gas.
Uh when surfac whistle invented the jet engine revolutionized the large of aviation we think our new engine because we are a small agile team we're able to immediately pivot on a sprint mission we we've been able to create this which is the world's first tooidal gas turbine toidal gas turbine. So it's tooidal So, so finally we want to brief you about contracts which is half the climate impact of baby and so Katrina and Anna are both working on a sysunction project.
must before entering this at the moment.
Yeah. Good shot.
hospitals to power aviation. We realize it's a huge goal. So we broke it down.
The way we want to do it is to create style designs.
>> Do a couple more people in here, John, and then we'll step aside.
>> Sure.
>> Yeah.
over there under the building. And today, thanks to the dedication of everyone or many of the people in this room, we are opening the Whittle Lab two months early.
[applause] >> [applause] >> So shall this is why we built the Bennett Innovation Lab as part of the new Whittle Laboratory. Small elite teams free to take risks designing, prototyping and testing at speed, compressing development times from years to month. Today at the Frank Whittle Summit, we've convened an unparalleled group of leaders to define the missions and built a network of the partners to deliver on this goal. For all of this, we owe a profound thanks to Peter Bennett. Peter, where are you?
Peter [applause] [applause] the and the answer was innovation and speed in n in July 1941 as a fresh a fresh wave of blitz creek approached winston Churchill was informed by his chief scientific officer Lord Balance's predecessor um that Whittle's new jet engine could be developed at scale with immense speed. The prime minister of the time, Winston Churchill, sent an action this day memo to the Ministry of Aircraft Production and it reads, "Report to me whether in the circumstances we ought not to proceed forth with in the production of Whittleles aircraft without waiting production of say a thousand whittleles." However, the ministry to reindustrialize Britain and make it globally competitive, we must once again have action this day. Sir, in the same spirit, may I ask you to take the first action of the new Whittle Laboratory and unveil the plaque that will sit with it.
>> [applause] [applause] [applause] >> testing this Elizabeth in theater acoustics. um just what a remarkable figure professor Rob Miller is because without his enthusiasm and his drive none of this would have happened.
[snorts] I was happy to be a great admirer of his his whole approach and um having studied history here good god nearly 60 years ago in this university it does teach you a lot about exactly what she was saying about the whittle uh engine back in at the beginning of the last war and what is happening here now is a great demonstration I think of capturing so much of this country's remarkable ability of producing innovative, inventive characters, but then the problem always is turning that into something that can be turn could be made effective. So the fact that we have this laboratory now and such a big international involvement, I hope will really make a difference in speeding up our efforts to save this poor old planet from imminent catastrophe. as a result of the overheating as we can only well to see now. So I hope I hope you have great success here and I look forward to visiting and I'm still alive the next time. [laughter] [applause] [applause] [applause] Thank you.
