Emirates Rejects Boeing 777Xs
Added:What we have certainly known throughout this decade is that Emirates's patience with the Boeing 7X has worn thin throughout the 2020s. President Sir Tim Clark has often taken the opportunity to publicly critique the jet and the many missteps that have forced lengthy delays. Now, Clark has made it abundantly clear that the early built 79s will be rejected by the airline, likening their value to baked bean cans and something that will not be taken up despite them being built. Flagged by reporting in the Telegraph, the comments come as preparations do ramp up for the eventual delivery of the first trip 79 next year and Emirates also preparing for the type. Clark's headline commentary on the trip 79 centers on jets assembled in 2019 and 2020 which were obviously completed in an early configuration. That early configuration came before the multiple structural software and system changes were baked into the overall certified design through the years. Clark told the Telegraph that they will outright refuse to take on the batch of these 7X models, stating that we're not taking them and that's it. He reaffirmed his stance, saying that as far as they're concerned as well, what Emirates actually ends up doing with these early build trip 79s is completely up to them, but they will not be taking them on. While Boeing has been said, according to Clark, to be trying to find new homes for these aircraft, it will be a struggle as the early built models require significant rework to more closely align with the current certification build. the cost and resources required to make the change may not be worth the ordeal. Clark's outright rejection of the early built 79 though isn't a surprise. Still, his comments flag a grueling certification period for the flagship product and how over the decade the design for the jets has shifted significantly. The Emirates chief is pointing to the many FAA regulated airframe modifications during the certification which puts the early 77 9 that have been on the ground for years under a completely different scope to what is currently being built and undergoing those flight test certification. The modifications resulted from the static fuselage failures during pressurization and the subsequent reinforcement work needed.
Major software changes followed after pitchup behavior was then identified in 2020. a thrust control issue in 2024 then forced a further redesign and delay. When all of these, among the many other struggles that have been hit on the Boeing 7X are put together, it shows changes that leave these early airframes so far from their final configuration that heavy rework would be required to make them feasible for EIS. Clark has warned before that his airline would not accept any 7Xs that fall short of contractual performance and the reliability commitments in place. In 2021, he spoke with Reuters and said, "Even then, we will not accept an airplane unless it performs 100% in accordance with the contract." And his latest views in 2026 are just a further reiteration of that. Emirates President Sir Tim Clark's further comments about the trip 79 and his reluctance to take on some of those early builds follow previous reporting by the air current which did go on to confirm that one of the early Emiratesbound trip 779 has already been scrapped known as WH007.
This jet was the 7th-9 built and assembled rolled out in July 2019. It even had partial branding of the Dubai based carrier featured on the folding wing tips. However, while it was expected to enter service, obviously it never did. And on top of that, it never even received its engines. That meant across its six years stored at Painfield, it never flew. By 2025, and as Clark has flagged, the gulf between the early build standard and what had eventually developed in the certified design. It couldn't have been further.
With the many structural reinforcements and software fixes paired with the system changes, the gap was so large that Boeing couldn't make the economics of a rework really make sense internally. And the customer that this trip 79 was destined for had absolutely no interest in taking it on. As a consequence, the airframe was dismantled in the summer of 2025 and the cost written off as part of the roughly $15 billion in charges that Boeing has already put against the trip 7X program.
It's a heavy price to pay for a flagship that has had it anything but smooth since first entering the industry in 2013. certainly does also come amid a lot of strong progress on the trip 7X family as the manufacturer advances through the remaining pillars of flight certification to get the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration. Something they are eagerly chasing. However, one thing that it has really grappled with is the many earlybuilt trip 79s and the strong inventory has really caused headaches.
While building the planes at an anticipated and pretty normal pace in the approval process did make sense on the surface, the beautiful thing about sitting here in 2026 is we have hindsight that was not present at the time. And it has, if anything, shown the trip 7X and what's happened with it to be a bit of a more dramatic example of how the current number of pre-built jets in storage has ballooned. It's not just the trip 7X, and it won't forever be the trip 7X. and any plane in the past and or future that has endured a lengthy certification battle. Early builds are always going to exist and they will require reconfiguration and updates to allow them to meet their certified standard and the expectations of customers who will eventually take on the models. Clark's comments really do tap into the unease around this era of production. There is good news for Boeing and for Emirates. What we know is that quality metrics and oversight have dramatically improved since those 2019 and 2020 pre-builds. It means that the jets that are currently slated for delivery are definitely meeting the criteria set out. And if they are maybe from a couple of years ago, they only require slight rework rather than a complete overhaul with an airline like Emirates unwilling to bring on a jet like that.
