Pearce’s commentary expertly highlights the tactical irony of an air defense system failing to defend itself against the very drones it was built to stop. It is a concise, sobering look at how low-cost attrition is systematically devaluing conventional military hardware.

BREAKING: Ukrainian Drones Hit Russian MiG-29 & Pantsir S1 @ Kursk Airbase
Added:Hello team, welcome to another ATP Geopolitics video with myself Jonathan M.S. Pierce. This is a Ukraine war breaking news update concerning a drone strike, or at least two drone strikes actually, on an airfield in Kursk. That It's a shame there weren't more drones operating there because there was plenty to destroy, but one MiG-29 and a Pantsir S1 air defense system were targeted here.
And I presume successfully destroyed.

Right, let's get to the details.
So, Ukraine is claiming destruction, says Tim White, of another Russian fighter jet and an air defense system at the same time, the 15th grade 200th says it struck the Khalino airfield in Kursk region. MiG-29 fighter jet and a Pantsir S1 were destroyed.
Now, the idea that is important here is the fighter jet and the system guarding it were both hit in in one strike, or not in one in the in two strikes technically.
I guess, and we'll see in a second, I guess they had a choice to take out two planes and took out the plane and the air defense system. I presume so they can come back and take out further planes more easily at at another point.
Now, before we look at the video, let's talk about where we are. This is Ukraine here. We have these north of Ukraine oblasts. You've got Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk up here. Kursk oblast here has the city of Kursk in the middle of it, and just to the east of the city of Kursk is the airport, uh this airbase here, and we are going to be looking at the right-hand side of the airbase, just this corner here. Uh and I'll show point to you exactly where we are looking at.
So, you have a a white building here, a couple of hangars there, and you've got on top of these you can't see them here.
I don't know when this uh was taken, uh but you have some air defense systems or or a an air defense system on top of one of these berms here, one of these embankments, and then plane sitting in front, and the plane gets one plane gets destroyed. And then uh the air defense system sitting on top. So, let's have a look at this uh video, see what you think.
Okay. So, here we have the airbase. I was showing you uh the corner here, uh and this is where we are looking at.
And here is the MiG. Now, you can see there's a MiG there, and but I presume another MiG-29 over here, uh right next to it. And yet, just one MiG was taken out, and then the air defense system um that's sitting on top of I think in the air defense system is is it there or on top of that one? One of these two.
Um but yeah, so you can see the drone explodes on that plane, and then it goes for this air defense system that is much smaller than you think. These are fairly sizable embankments here, uh and that's a Pantsir-S1 sitting on top uh that then gets hit, one presumes.
This is um I don't know. I Yeah, I presume it's automated targeting going on here.
You've got a a very blurred red reticle, maybe. I don't know.
Can't quite see. Anyway, let's just watch that again. So, we have the airbase here, uh then zooms in to see this MiG-29.
What's frustrating is that had there been what, five or six drones here, you could think of quite a bit more that gets taken out. So, you've got two planes here. Just trying to see, can I zoom in on this? No, I can't zoom on a video. Um Just trying to see where the air defense system is. I think it might be on top of this one here. Um but anyway, yeah.
Uh and the plane gets taken out.
And then we have uh on top I unless it's somewhere else in the airbase, but anyway, the choice is to take out a a MiG-29 and the Pantsir here. MiG-29s they say it's worth $25 million. The Pantsir S1 worth $20 million.
Uh but one hopes that taking out the air defense system leaves this airbase vulnerable to be struck again. I always wonder why in these sorts of situations there aren't like you know, if you've got reconnaissance drones spotting and able to spot for these strikes, then why are you not getting 20-odd drones just flying over here?
You know, you would if you could, you won't, so you can't. Maybe in these situations you are sort of hunting over these areas and you you manage to get your reconnaissance drone to this position without getting shot down.
You're like, "We've got it. We've got it. How many drones have we got ready now?" It's like now or never. It's like, "Well, what units we got in the area?
It's right. We can get and get you two drones up there." Okay, we've got two drones to get through. Or maybe they sent five drones, but three drones got shot down. I I don't know the the situation here. But the end result is that they have taken two targets out here. The two high-level assets for the Russians and that degrades their capabilities north of the border there.
Uh this plane probably used to drop guided glide bombs, not 100% sure.
Um but anyway, it is not able to be used now and the Pantsir S1 can no longer protect, one presumes, that airbase, which means this airbase, one would hope, is now even more vulnerable to further strikes.
Um not immediately clear what other material was available to be hit. Uh we don't really have too many shots of the airbase as a whole, just that one. And it's too far away to be able to see what kind of uh what material might be there. We're dealing with this corner down here, and we only sort of get to see that there are two planes in that image, as far as we can work out, and then it then it cuts to here.
I don't know, is that a plane there?
Um in front of the warehouse.
More in front of the hangar. I don't think it is, actually. No. Mm, maybe, maybe not. This is half sticking out. I don't I don't It's quite difficult to see.
But certainly there are there are two planes available to be hit uh here.
And there are other sort of long white objects that I don't know that they're planes, particularly. They don't seem to have wings or anything. So, I'm assuming two planes there available to be taken out out in the open, uh and they are One of them is struck, and then the air defense system. So, good news for the Ukrainians. Excellent stuff. We want to see more of that. And uh we have seen a number of planes get hit on the runways, mainly in Crimea recently. So, it's really good to see this north of the border in the Kursk Oblast. Um good stuff. Right, that's enough for me. Take care, and I'll speak to you soon.
