Their skull has a feature found in almost no other bird. A refinement suited to their dense tropical forest environment in South and Southeast Asia. The oriental bay owl, Fidilus Badius, is the better known of the two recognized species. But the Congo bay owl, Fidilus pragun, is one of the most mysterious birds on Earth. It was formally described from a single specimen in 1951.
And then for roughly 45 years, it effectively vanished from confirmed records, not confirmed alive again until the 1990s. a gap that makes it something of a ghost in the ornithological literature. Bay owls are so secretive, so tied to dense lowland and foothill forest that their basic ecology, including diet, breeding timing, and territory size, remains poorly documented, and the species count within the genus itself is still debated among taxonomists.
Eagle owls. The Eurasian eagle owl bou is the kind of animal that makes you rethink what a bird is capable of. With a wingspan reaching up to 188 cm and females weighing as much as 4.2 kg, these are not just large owls, but genuinely large predators by any standard. Documented taking prey, including young deer, foxes, herand raptors up to and including falcons and hawks. Their deep, resonant territorial hoot carries over four kilometers in still air, and a single pair may defend a territory spanning tens of square kilometers of rocky gorge, forested hillside, and open country. Those blazing orange to red eyes are among the most striking features of any bird. And the prominent ear toughs that frame the face serve no auditory function whatsoever, operating purely as social and mood signaling structures. Eagle owls are extraordinarily longived with captive individuals documented surviving past 60 years. In ancient Rome, their appearance was treated as a serious omen with classical accounts noting an eagle owl landing on the roof of the capital as a portent of disaster. And according to accounts preserved from antiquity, sightings were associated with the deaths of several prominent Romans. The genus Boubo extends far beyond Europe with eagle owl relatives across Africa and Asia. And taxonomists continue to debate exactly how many of these regional forms represent distinct species versus geographic variation within a single widespread lineage.
Snowy owl. The snowy owl is the heaviest owl in North America by average body mass with females reaching nearly 3 kg.
And it has solved the problem of Arctic life in a way no other owl has. It simply stopped being nocturnal. In the high Arctic, where snowy owls breed, summer means continuous daylight. And an owl that refused to hunt in sunlight would starve. So snowy owls hunt whenever prey is available, regardless of the time of day, perching on elevated ridges and hummocks and scanning vast open tundra with exceptional longd distance vision.
Males become progressively whiter with each mol, while females and juveniles retain heavy dark brown barring, a reliable clue to sex and age that is unusual in the owl world. Rather than migrating on a predictable schedule, snowy owls are nomadic, tracking the population cycles of lemmings across the Arctic. And in years when lemming populations collapse, snowy owls appear in large numbers far south of their normal range in what ornithologists call eruption events, bringing them to airports, beaches, and open farmland across the northern United States and southern Canada. A single productive individual may consume more than 1,600 lemmings in a year, and the owls cash frozen prey in snow when hunting is good. returning to stored meals when conditions deteriorate.

Though the average lifespan in the wild is considerably shorter due to vehicle collisions which represent the leading cause of mortality for this species. Fishing owls. Fishing owls are what happens when evolution decides that the standard owl blueprint needs significant revision. spread across Africa in the genus Scottilia and Asia in the genus Katupa. These owls have independently arrived at a similar set of modifications for catching fish.
The facial disc is reduced or nearly absent because hunting at a water surface is a visual task rather than an acoustic one. And there is no advantage to funneling sound when your prey is visible beneath the surface. The feet have spiny projections called spicules on the toe pads. The exact same adaptation found in ospreys, which provide grip on the slippery, muscular bodies of live fish. Asian fishing owls grow large enough to have been historically confused with eagle owls, and some taxonomic authorities still place them within the genus bou.
Blakeon's fish owl, Bouo Blackeston, found in the old growth repairarian forests of Russia, China, and Japan, is by some measurements the largest owl alive, with a wingspan reaching 190 cm.
And it is also seriously threatened, with Russian population estimates suggesting fewer than 1,000 individuals remain in that country, according to recent surveys. The African fishing owls in genus Scotoilia are among the least studied large owls anywhere with entire aspects of their breeding biology still not documented. Their large size and spectacular appearance making their obscurity in the literature almost baffling.
Tawny owl. The tawny owl is responsible for one of the most persistent misconceptions in natural history. The classic twitu of European folklore is not a single owl calling but a duet between two birds. The female produces a sharp kiwick and a male responds with the soft rolling hoohoo oo. And the combination heard across a still autumn night in a British woodland has embedded itself so deeply in cultural consciousness that it became the default sound effect for owl in decades of film and radio production. Tawny owls are among the most sedentary birds in Europe, with some individuals spending their entire lives within a territory of just a few hectares. And they hold those territories with a ferocity that occasionally has consequences.
The naturalist and photographer Eric Hosking lost an eye to a tawny owl defending its nest while he attempted to photograph the birds in 1937, an incident he later commemorated by titling his autobiography An eye for a bird. London city parks hold stable, thriving populations, making the tawny owl one of the few apex predators successfully integrated into dense urban environments.
Unlike most members of the stricks genus, Tawny owls have dark brown rather than yellow eyes, and they occur in two color morphs, brown and gray, with the gray morph more common in colder northern parts of their range. Originally confined to forest east of the Great Plains, the Bard owl expanded westward through the 20th century as human modification of the landscape, including shelter belts, repairarian corridors, and fragmentation of the grassland barrier, allowed forest dependent owls to cross a gap they could not have crossed historically. In the Pacific Northwest, the consequences of that expansion are playing out as a genuine conservation emergency. Barred owls directly compete with and displace the federally threatened spotted owl stricks oxidentalis across the spotted owl's remaining range and the two species hybridize to produce fertile offspring informally called sparred owls complicating both the genetics and the legal status of spotted owl recovery efforts. Bard owls are also the most frequently admitted large owl in North American wildlife rehabilitation facilities, primarily because their attraction to road corridors for hunting puts them in constant proximity to vehicle traffic. Because ural owls defend their nests with a directness and commitment to contact that is unusual even among territorial owls, routinely striking researchers on the head from behind with enough force to cause injury. In Japan, where the Ural owl is known as Fukuru, the species carries deep cultural weight as a symbol of wisdom, luck, and protection against hardship with stylized owl imagery based on the eural owl's distinctive wide-faced long-tailed silhouette appearing across Japanese craft, architecture, and art. Long-term population studies in Scandinavia running over multiple decades have revealed that ural owl pairs show strong lifetime mate fidelity and that breeding territories are sometimes inherited by offspring of the original pair, creating a kind of generational continuity in the landscape. Their call is a rough barking series of hoots with a coarser texture than the cleaner calls of the tawny owl or barred owl. Pygmy owls.
Pygmy owls are an object lesson in why you should not judge a predator by its size. The genus glossidium contains more than 30 species distributed across every continent except Antarctica and Australia, making it the largest single owl genus on Earth. And virtually every one of those species is a ferocious and committed hunter that regularly takes prey equal to or larger than its own body weight, including songbirds, small mammals, and lizards, seized with the same direct aggression you would expect from a hawk three times larger. They are dal hunters, most active at dawn and dusk, and their daytime presence makes them targets for mobbing by small songirds who recognize them as threats.
A cluster of agitated chickies or warblers in a small tree is often a reliable sign that a pygmy owl is sitting somewhere in the center of the disturbance, which makes them paradoxically easier for bird watchers to locate than many strictly nocturnal owls. Most species have a pair of dark feather patches on the back of the head that closely resemble eyes when viewed from behind called ochelli. A feature that may make the owl appear watchful and alert from any angle, potentially deterring attacks by predators approaching from the rear. The fujenous pygmy owl of the American Southwest was the center of a separate endangered species act controversy in the late 1990s over suburban development in the sonoran desert of Arizona. Unlike the majority of North American owls, elf owls are genuinely migratory, departing from Mexico each autumn and returning in spring, a behavioral trait that sets them apart from the largely resident owls that share their breeding range. Despite their size, they are aggressive at the nest and will mob much larger owls that approach their cavity.
Burrowing owl. The burrowing owl, Athen Kunicularia, is the only owl in the Western Hemisphere that nests underground. And it has built an entire life history around the infrastructure created by other species.
Across the grasslands of North and South America, burrowing owls occupy burrows excavated by prairie dogs, ground squirrels, badgers, and armadillos, saving the energetic cost of digging in exchange for being entirely dependent on those species as housing providers.
When disturbed at the burrow entrance, burrowing owls perform a distinctive rhythmic bobbing motion that may mimic the sound and visual behavior of a rattlesnake inside the burrow, a bluff that buys them time against terrestrial predators.
Perhaps their most remarkable behavior involves deliberately lining the burrow entrance with animal dung, particularly mammal scat, which attracts dung beetles that the owls then harvest as prey.

That same small, flatheaded, frowning owl was introduced to Britain beginning in the 1870s with Thomas Pace credited as an early introducer in Northamptonshire. And despite being a non-native species, it has become sufficiently naturalized that it is now considered part of the British avapana.
Though populations have declined significantly since the 1990s due to agricultural intensification and the loss of the rough grassland and traditional farmland habitats it depends on. Little owls are kpuscular and dal rather than strictly nocturnal, which means they are the owl most likely to be seen perched openly on a fence post or a low branch in broad daylight across their European range, blinking that heavy browed, disapproving expression at anyone who stops to watch. Their diet is unusually Catholic for an owl, including earthworms, beetles, small mammals, and small birds, which reflects an adaptability to degraded and agricultural habitats that has helped them persist where more specialized owls have vanished. In years of peak lemming abundance, male boreal owls have been documented maintaining up to four active nests simultaneously with different females across a territory, providing food to all of them before abandoning the entire arrangement when prey populations crash the following year. Despite a range circling the entire boreal zone from Scandinavia through Russia and across Canada, they are genuinely rarely seen.
A product of strict nocturnal habits, dense habitat, and a tendency to sit motionless against tree trunks at dawn when the risk of detection is highest.
Northern saw wet owl. The northern saw wet owl agolius a catatakus is named for one of its calls. A rapid series of whistled tootses that was compared by early American naturalists to the sound of a large crosscut saw being filed on a wet stone. A metallic scraping repetition that continues for minutes at a time and that most people hearing it for the first time in a dark forest cannot identify as coming from a bird.
At 17 to 22 cm long and weighing between 54 and 151 grams, sawet owls are among the smallest owls in North America. Yet, systematic banding programs began in the 1980s revealed that they migrate in numbers nobody had suspected. with some eastern banding stations catching hundreds of individuals in a single October night during peak movement. The coordinated banding network called Project Owlnet has collectively banded well over 100,000 individuals, accumulating a data set on migration timing routes, an annual variation that remains one of the largest for any North American raptor.
In daylight, roosting saw wet owls press themselves against conifer trunks or deep within dense foliage and frequently allow human observers to approach within arms length without flushing. An apparent fearlessness or perhaps simple confidence in their own camouflage that makes them favorites at banding demonstrations. It is the largest owl in Central America. A serious predator at the top of the neotropical forest food web, taking apossums, large insects, crabs, and according to some documented records, sloths. Though sloth predation events are rare and may involve juvenile or weakened individuals. Juveniles present one of the most dramatic plumage inversions of any bird.
