Seller Said This $300 1000cc Motorcycle Would Never Run (PROBLEM FOUND)
Added:Check out this tank of a bike. Weighing in close to 700 lb, having 110 horsepower with a top speed of 135 mph.
This is the 1987 Kawasaki Concourse 1000. 1,000cc of pure bike here. And these were supposed to be extremely reliable back in the day.
Top-of-the-line bike. It's a sport touring bike. And uh people just love these. These were produced from 1986.
So, this is the secondyear bike all the way up until 2006. Second generation bike was from 2007 to 2022. You can tell that people really like these bikes based on how many Kawasaki made. But yeah, very, very nice bike, very comfortable bike, and like I said, very reliable, and that's why people liked them. So, this bike actually took the engine from the Kawasaki Ninja 1000R, but instead of the chain drive, they had the shaft drive on this one, making it even more reliable. And this is a six-speed 4cylinder bike. They put smaller carbs on this bike and a smaller cam than the Ninja to tune it down a little bit. Bike was purchased for $300.
The seller stated that it was sitting since 2020. You can see the license plate here. I guess the seller stated that it stopped running and he didn't want to deal with it. So, he parked it in his storage unit for the past 6 years until he was ready to sell it. So, that's kind of why this bike sat and that's why it was $300. These bikes are huge. They're hard to move around.
They're hard to store and people get rid of them for cheap because of that reason. Especially when no dealership or mechanic will work on them. They're kind of a pain in the butt with the four carbs. So today we are going to try to resurrect this one and see if we can get this thing to run by the end of the video. Obviously it's going to take a lot of work. We're going to try to diagnose the problem as to why it didn't run and why it sat for 6 years and then hopefully get this thing up running and driving so we can go rip this thing around. That's the goal. So let's get this thing off the trailer. We're going to take a closer look at it and uh we'll start working on this thing.
All right, a little walk around of this thing.
Definitely not the coolest looking bike, but not too bad for 1987.
You can see that the tank has some rippling.
I think that might just be from heat.
probably stored outside or parked outside for a long period of time. Check out the mileage here. 46,416 miles, but these things go forever. So, that's probably just getting broken in.
Brakes do work. Everything appears to work. Does have a key. It's actually not in bad shape at all.
Wheels look good. Paint all looks good.
Body looks awesome. Couple rips in the seat.
All the blinkers are on it.
Pipes look good.
Carbs are pretty gked up, but it does have the original key and carbs on there.
Yeah, it actually looks like it's in pretty good shape. For 300 bucks, I don't think we can we can lose on this one. Hopefully not, as long as the damage isn't too bad. So, let's get this thing in the garage and we'll start diagnosing this one. I'm interested to see why the guy parked it.
Well, this thing definitely weighs 700 lb. That thing is hard to push uphill.
Holy cow, that's a big bike. But as I was pushing it, I noticed that the left mirror was broken off. So, I'm wondering if this thing was laid down on the left side and that's why it was put away. I'm not seeing any other damage, though the body at all. Uh, there's a little bit right there. So, maybe it just tipped in the garage or something, but I thought that was interesting. So, we'll keep that in mind as we start diagnosing this thing. All right, let's make sure it is 1987. Coming down to the VIN down here. Let's see if we can get to it. Right there is the VIN. 10th digit. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. Looks like an H.

Let's see. H. Yep. 1987. So, it is in fact a 1987 Concourse 1000.
So, we have that confirmed. Let's go ahead and start diagnosing this thing.
So, the first thing we're going to do is check the oil. See if the seller drained that or changed it before he stored it for 6 years. All right, we're on the left side of the bike. It looks like the fill is right here for the oil. And down here, there's actually a window. Let's get a flashlight. Look, look in there.
Is that empty?
That's not good. And the bike is tipped on this side.
H, that looks like somebody was checking it out.
That's not a great sign, huh?
I think that's empty.
Pretty sure. We're going to wipe that off, clean the window off, and just confirm. But I'm pretty sure that's completely empty in there.
Well, we're definitely off to a bad start here. For some reason, that oil was drained and it is completely empty.
So, um, yeah, that's not great. So, we have absolutely zero oil in it. So, we can't really check that. I mean, obviously, when we turn the key, we're not getting anything to light up. So, I'm guessing that battery is shot.
Nothing's turning on at all.
So, it has been sitting for 6 years, so that's to be expected. But, let's see if the key can open up the gas tank. We're going to take a look in there and see how old that gas looks.
All right, let's see how bad.
Yeah, gas's a little rough.
Looks a little gked up in there.
It's not too bad.
This looks like there's a bunch of old gas that got stuck to the bottom of the tank, but I don't think there's any gas in there. It's all dried up, pretty sure. Let's see if we can hear anything.
Yeah, there's absolutely zero gas in there. So, typically when the gas sink is empty like that and the oil's drained out, they were probably going to scrap this thing at one point. They must just not wanted to to haul it over there.
Maybe they didn't have a trailer or something. But yeah, every time I've seen a gas tank drain and the oil drain, it was getting ready for the scrapyard.
Well, it looks like we can't get a sample of the gas. Let's try to get the seat off of here. Not really sure how to do that. Looks like there's a key back here.

Has a battery in it.
Let's take a peek in here. Looks like the CDI box is here.
Really big battery.
So, it says 61014.
So, that's a pretty long time ago. 12 years ago, that's when the battery was changed. So, that's probably junk.
Looks like there might be a fuse box on the side over here. But, looks pretty clean. Let's get a reading on the battery and see how low that is. We can try to take that out and see if we can revamp that thing and get that to charge. We'll see.
Who thinks it's going to charge up here?
All right, taking a look at the gauge here. See how many volts we're at.
Oh, we have almost two.
Better than nothing. That might charge up. We'll try it. All right, battery is charging. We've got 12 volts going to it. We'll see if it can charge. You'd think these big sport touring bikes would have a really nice tool kit with them. We're going to look for that.
Let's see if we can take off the cutter here.

All right. So, just access to the brake fluid there. Let's open that up and just see if there's anything in there since we're over here.
The rear brake was working. Oh, yeah. It doesn't look bad at all. We'll just top that off. All right. Another one screw here.
All right. That looks like a fuse box.
Says fuse on it. What gave it away?
Sometimes sellers overlook the simplest thing. Sometimes it's just a blown fuse causing all the issues.
Let's take a peek here.
How does this come off here?
All right. Interesting. So, you've got two spares here. 30 amp and a 10 amp.
That's correct. You've got the tail light fuse here. Accessories, main fuse, horn, head, and flash. So, I'm guessing the only one that would cause issues is the main fuse here. And we can take this off, too. Check out all the wiring.
Sometimes that wiring can get pulled out.
All right. If you hear a beep, we're good to go. We'll check the spares, too.

All right, we're going to try to get the gas tank off. See if we can get to the carbs and the spark plugs. Take this guy off of here.
Can that lift up? Oh, yeah.
So, it's got a diaphragm and the peccock there. You can see that goes to a vacuum line, the little nipple, and then the big nipple goes to the carbs. You've got a plugin going to the gas tank sensor, I'm guessing.
All right. So, I'm guessing there's no fuel pump anywhere. Let's see.
Nope.
Doesn't look like it.
All right, let's take a peek. So, this is where the gas tank was hooked up to going to a sensor. Then it was hooked up there as well. And here is the gas line.
Looks pretty clean in there, actually.
Going down to the carbs right in there.
So, there's no pump or anything. Got the coils here. Those are nice and tight.

Looks like you've got the coolant in here. This is liquid cooled.
Spark plugs four, three, two, and one.
So, all the plug wires are in there correctly. You can see that looks good. All the plugs are in there. You can see some old gas spilled here. That looks horrible.

So that fuel sat for a long time in there. So I'm guessing every carb is gummed up.
Let's see if the throttle works.
Throttle works. Oh, it does have one of these on there. How does that work?
What does this thing even do?
Throttle's pretty sticky, but it does work.
All right, so what I think we're going to do is hook up a battery to it and see if anything lights up. See if the engine rotates over. And I guess we'll do a quick start attempt. See if there's any old gas left in the carb. See if it'll at least turn over and fire up for a brief second. All right, before we go ahead and turn this bike over, um, I don't want to turn it over dry. So, let's address the oil situation. So, the oil was completely drained out of it, it looks like, or leaked out at one point, but it looks like the drain bolt is right there on it. So, let's get that out. See if there's any remaining oil in here, and then we'll get some fresh oil going to the engine before we turn it over. Right on the fill, it says 3.7 L.
That's crazy.

So, was it smoking like crazy? Here's the drain plug.
Oh, yeah. There's some oil in there. Not a whole lot.
You can see it draining in there a little bit. We'll check out that oil.
Looks pretty black.
Well, oil doesn't look too bad.
There's quite a bit in there. I'd say that's two quarts. It was about halfway filled up cuz it takes 3.7 quarts. So that's probably why it didn't show up on the on the window.
But no metal flakes, no chunks in there.
So that is a great sign.
But I'm thinking it must have been smoking cuz where the heck did the rest of the oil go? Let's get some oil in here.

Before we do that, let's uh take the cap off here. See if there's any coolant.
All right. Coolant cap. See if we can get that off of here.
All right. I think I finally got it to come. That was a pain in the butt.
Let's see if that's filled up completely.
Let's dump a little bit in there.

All right. It was pretty filled up.
Didn't take a whole lot, so that's good. All right, let's um see if there's a head gasket issue. So, if we turn the bike over, if there's a head gasket issue, it will be spurting coolant out of here like crazy. Let's see.

So, head gasket should be fine.
All right. Now that we have the correct amount of oil in there and the correct amount of coolant in there, let's just turn this thing over and see if she fires. There might be gas left in there in the carbs. We'll see.

All right, with choke on, with choke off, with the throttle held in, no change.
She doesn't want to fire. So, I'm guessing those carbs are gked up or there's something else going on with it, like no spark. So, let's go ahead get the spark plugs out and investigate further. All right, let the fun begin.
Let's start taking out the plugs.
All right, we can check the plug wire, too, going to each one.
See what that looks like.
Ooh, that looks good. Nice wire exposed.
Let me take a look at the boot. Boot looks really good, too.
So, I like to just spray a little WD40 just to luber up that wire a little bit.
But yeah, wire was really exposed there.
So, that one checks out.

We can get to the two center ones here. Looks like they're kind of difficult to get to. Oh, that one wasn't really connected in there.
Where can these get pulled up through?
I think right through here.
We might have to take the coils off to get to that one. So, this is number three.

So, that's no good. That might have been the problem right there. Maybe it was only running on three cylinders and that's why I put it away. Couldn't figure it out. So, we'll tape that up.

So two of them at 190, one at 200 and one at 160.
All right. So we have great spark on every single cylinder. We have good compression. So that really only leaves fuel. So, unfortunately, we have to take out all four carbs, clean these up, and hopefully that solves our problem. We'll see. There's a reason this guy parked it.
And I feel like cleaning the carbs would be too simple, but you never know. Let's open these guys up. So, let's try to get the airbox off. There's a bolt here and one on the other side. We'll kind of slide that back and see if that's enough room to get the carbs out of here. Here.

Main jet is clear. 125 for the main jet little bit.
And we got the pilot out. I thought that was stripped out, but we got her. And good thing because that is just packed full.
Wow, that is really clogged. And here is the fuel screw. Assuming it turns out we are one, two, about two and a half turns out on the fuel screw. Get that out of here.
Should be a spring in there, too.
Possibly an O-ring and washer as well.

That's all working. All new O-rings in between the gas lines here. So, we should be good to go. All right.

That's working perfect. We've got our breather line here hooked up. One to here, one to the nipple over here. And then we've got the vacuum line hooked up right to here that goes to the tank. So, we are set to go there. Let's go ahead and get our plugs back in.

So, we're just going to blow that out.
Put it all back together. That was not bad at all.
Let's see.
Well, it's finally time for the first start attempt here. So, we went through the whole gas tank, the petcock, everything's good there. The cars were horrible to go through. Getting those out was such a pain. Probably took me like an hour to get those out. Um, and then probably 2 hours to clean.
Yeah. And then the airbox is absolutely filthy. a little mice living in there.
Um, but we confirmed there's spark.
There's compression on every cylinder.
So, there's really no reason this thing shouldn't fire. The only thing I saw wrong with the whole bike was that one coil wire must have been sparking on the engine causing issues. So, that's the only thing I can think that would maybe cause this thing to run three cylinders.
So, let's go ahead choke this thing. See if she fires up. And this will be the first start attempt in about 6 years.
All right, that looks good.
Turn our PC out to prime.
All right, turn this on.
Here we go.
Choke it.
Oh Yeah, fired right up.
That's what I'm talking about.
No leaking yet, which is great.
We got the choke off as well.
Cannot believe this is idling.
Uhoh.
Starting to smoke.
That's not good. Check this out.

I think we know why it was low on oil.

Oh, it's smoking a lot.
I was afraid of that.

But it's just puffing out the smoke.
Ah, all that work. And it's going to smoke.

No leaking at all from the car. Look at that. Not a single drop coming out of there, man. She's smoky, y'all.

Leaking coolant.
Where is that coming from?
Well, what the heck?
Let's take the gas tank off. Investigate that coolant leak.
Hm.
All right. Found the problem. The cap wasn't on all the way. It was on halfway. So, it was off on one side. So, we got that tightened back down. That's now secure.
So, that's why it was leaking.
All right. That makes me feel better.
All right. Let's see if that coolant problem's fixed. See if she fires right back up.
It runs so good, too.
What a shame.
Cannot believe it's smoking like that.
I thought I was getting a great deal on this thing.
No more coolant leaking. That's good.
It was just dumping before.
Could not sound better.
Takes a while for the smoke to start.

I don't get it now. It's not smoking.
I wonder if it was burning off that coolant that was spilling on it. There's no way. That was just puffing out a ton of smoke.
Maybe it just needs to warm up. But yeah, it's not smoking at all now. Well, the battery did not survive. We tried charging it for a good what was it? 7 hours and it's at 7 volts. So, not quite. So, we've got a newer battery here we're going to put in there.
It's not quite as big. Hopefully, it still works.
This thing looks shiny.
really cleaned up good. And that's like five seconds of cleaning.

Well, it looks like the hydraulic clutch is not working. It's grabbing a little bit, but not enough to move it.
So, I think we have to bleed that. It's right down here.
Check out the hydraulic clutch fluid.
Oh man. Oh, that's going to strip out.
See if the impact can take them off here.
Oh, just stripping them right out.
Wow.
All right, that's all the fluid that was left in there. Doesn't look too good. It says use only DOT 4 brake fluid. So, we'll fill that up and see if that helps anything. But, uh, we might have to rebule this.
So, the lever feels pretty firm.
So, I think it's pushing the rod. I think maybe the rod is just not coming back out, releasing the clutch.
So, we might have to tear into that and see what's going on there. Very odd.
I just looked up a common problem for the concourse and it looks like the return valve, which is that hole there, can get clogged. And if that gets clogged, it never fully releases pressure back into the master cylinder. So, what we're going to do, and it looks like it is clogged for sure, is clean this up. Take a little wire and push through there. See if we can unclog that as best as we can here.
It's pretty nasty in there.
That is for sure clogged. It's got to be the problem.
I don't think that's going through yet.

Get you guys cleaned up. Holy cow, that was insane.

So, yeah, that was the problem, I think.
Let's try to clean up this lens here.
Jeez, still blurry. All right, that's a lot better. All right, now we can get everything back together here and see if that works. I think that might have been the problem.
Doesn't feel any different. All right, let's see if releasing that pressure from the master cylinder makes the clutch work here. Let's see.

Yeah, This thing's running great.
Fires up instantly.
Clutch is working good now.
Thing's a tank.
really slow.
I can see why people like them.

Well, I can definitely see why people like these things. It's like riding a couch. These things are super comfortable to ride. The riding position is perfect on them. You're like not too far down, not too upright. It feels perfect. And this bike is running flawlessly. runs through all six gears, has good power, revs out completely, and it's not even smoking. So, that problem went away. I don't know what that was, but it stopped smoking somehow someway.
And the clutch is working great. So, we got everything fixed up on this bike today. And for 300 bucks, I think we got a crazy good deal on this thing. So, I'm going to fire this thing up one more time, make sure it's not smoking, and uh I think that's pretty much it. This one should be done.

Well, no more smoke. This one's completely fixed up. So, I'm thinking the guy that sold it either had problems with that clutch and couldn't fix it or maybe something to do with that spark plug coil that we fixed or something to do with the smoking. I'm not sure, but it seemed like it maybe cleared out all the oil that was in the pipe. I don't know if he overfilled it or didn't fill it up enough, but it probably was smoking before. Um, or maybe it was just burning off old fuel from the gas tank.
I'm not sure, but it stopped smoking.
That's all fixed. And uh I'm not really sure why he parked it. I'm thinking it it must have been the clutch, you know, maybe it stopped stopped going, stopped moving. He parked it thinking he would fix it and just never got around to it.
I'm not sure. But for 300 bucks, we took the risk, got this thing, and it ended up being a pretty good project. Very, very nice bike. And uh I'm really happy we got this one fixed up. So hopefully you guys enjoy the video on the 1987 Kawasaki Concourse 1000. Fixing this thing up, diagnosing all the problems, doing the first start, and then the first test drive today.
