A derecho is a severe weather phenomenon characterized by long-lived, widespread wind storms that can produce damaging winds across hundreds of miles, typically lasting 12+ hours. Unlike tornadoes which are localized and short-lived, derechos create extensive damage through straight-line winds that can reach 70-90+ mph, capable of peeling metal roofs, knocking down power lines, and toppling lightweight structures. The storm in this video, which began in Kansas and moved through Oklahoma, demonstrated classic derecho characteristics including a broad wind field, minimal hail, and continuous damaging winds that qualified it as a derecho event.

Tracking Oklahoma Storms | June 22, 2026
Added:Lacey, so we we were coming back in and we pulled off on this is I-240 and Bryant. Uh just uh this will be just east of where we were when we were on 240 and 35 when our winds got chaotic and then all the power went out. So either there was just a a a tremendous amount of straight line wind which is almost a guarantee in this area or like we were saying there could have been a quick spin-up. So we talked to the I just talked to the police officer that here that's got the road closed.
She said that there's power lines down from right here to the south.
Um she said she estimated close to a half a mile and then all the way back to the east Sunny Lane all the way to Sooner. She said there's trees uprooted.
Um power poles laying in yards. Uh parts of roofs are somewhat peeled off.
So there's going to be some extensive damage right here on the east side of I-35 south side of I-240 between I'd say 240 and I mean I don't know how far south it goes but 89th for sure right here in this quadrant. Um this is where the basically where the tornado came uh back in November I think 2 years ago. So it's almost the exact same spot. So we're going to drive around and see what else we can find. Back to you.
>> And and also earlier this year that crossed uh you know from OCCC over to that area and had intermittent touchdowns along 240 that Brandon was on. Now when Brandon was on this a bit ago when this uh damage occurred we were measuring winds 90 to 93 mph on radar.
Now not to say the winds were that strong at the ground but definitely even if they were 80 85 that's why you're seeing that widespread damage and it easily could have been a tornado. It sure looked like one on radar. Um Brandon couldn't see any type of a cone or you know a funnel because of the blinding rain but power flashes everything lined up that was likely a brief touchdown um that moved kind of down I-240 earlier this morning. So, we'll be checking in with Brandon um throughout the morning. What was that, control room?
Okay. And then what Let's go back to the tornado warning, and I'm going to give you an update on this, and we'll go back to some more of the damage. Let's go to uh links one if we can. That's what you've got up there. Thank you. And this is the tornado warning that goes continues for northern and northeastern Hughes County from Wetumka over to Dustin. This storm has a lot of wind within it, 60-70, and I don't see anything now um in the way of a hook.
>> here in the past >> Yeah. Really since we started. It has.
>> It kind of ran, and that's what a lot of these have done is they've ramped up, and then we see the rotation weaken.
>> Sure. And that's that's It happens so quick. They go from, you know, we get this whole area where winds are rushing in one direction to then you start to get a little bit of inflow, and that's all you need is that southeast wind to be with that west wind to get a tight a tight circulation, but it's usually fairly brief. And this has been going on for what, 5-10 minutes? And now already it's hard to even find a hook. You kind of got everything just going in one direction. If you look on the wind field or the velocity, nothing as far as a a tight circulation there. Now, this could come back up. This could ramp back up, um but this is going to be approaching Dustin, and then eventually over towards Hanna, and moving into um towards Lake Eufaula.
That's that portion of the line. Going to go back down in central Hughes County. Now getting winds 50-60, maybe 70. Yeah, winds are measuring 45-50. Might have isolated gusts of 60-65 in Hughes County down towards Calvin.
And now this has blown through Ada. Ada still getting quite a bit of wind, 50 to 60, but no circulation. And then now um heading into Murray County down in south central Oklahoma in Sulphur.
And I'll put this back on. This is the circulation that came over El Reno a a of hours ago, and it was tornado warned and it's still an area of spin. You can still kind of see a hook there. It's just very very broad from Davis to Sulphur, Dougherty, and back down to Mill Creek eventually.
Uh Fox, Healdton, and Wilson, 50 to 60 mph winds and the same thing as you get further back towards Walters and down towards Waurika. So, this thing's going to keep going, keep chugging along all the way to the south, all of our southeast counties, and it's going to keep going down into Texas and eventually Arkansas.
Um there's now a new tornado warning um ongoing further north from Creek County over into Okmulgee County. Our sister station is on that, KOTV in Tulsa. They have trackers out watching that heading into Okmulgee County and this leading edge of this line is going to continue to do this. Pulses up, pulses down cuz the winds are just so expansive with this. Um this may go down as an actual derecho, which has to go for a certain amount of time, certain amount of miles um with damaging winds and I think we're getting close to that criteria.
>> are, too, because this started producing damaging wind events. I'm actually kind of curious now that you bring that up.
Um and it started producing damaging wind up in Kansas in like northwestern Kansas earlier.
>> And we're now >> definitely something interesting to look at. I'm going to check that out.
>> Okay. Angel, what time did you get here yesterday? Sunday.
>> 2:30 in the afternoon.
>> So, Andrew's going on 13 hours.
>> 13 hours.
>> hour 13.
>> this for you. Um so, yeah, our team, David's been here, of course, all night as well and uh still still an ongoing tornado warning here at 3:30 in the morning heading over towards Dustin and then making its way over towards Lake Eufaula. The most threatening port part of the storm is right here. Dustin, take your tornado precautions. Lowest level, center most portion of your home. Can't confirm this is on the ground. In fact, it looks really broad to me right now. I think the most likely scenario is it isn't, but you could could still have winds in excess of 70 headed your way.
It would be a west wind blowing to the east, so get away from windows, get to the lowest level of your home, and let this thing pass you on by. As we're looking at this, um Jeremy has come across some damage, okay? So, Jeremy's back in central Oklahoma. He's over near Dibble. Jeremy, um go ahead and give us an update. There's no severe weather, of course, in your area. Um what what what are we looking at? Go ahead, Jeremy.
>> And so, this is a roof. It's called the Word of Life Ministries >> Okay.
>> here in the town of Dibble, and you can see where the metal peeled back, and I see the purlins and some of the rafters. It looks like some of them actually may have got broken away, and there's a ton of metal on the downhill side. Really what what we had, this definitely was very much a kind of like a a tropical storm kind of damage. The nature of the damage I'm seeing as I'm driving around, maybe 80 mph wind damage in a lot of places. Lacy, back to you.
>> Okay. Yeah, definitely. Um so so expansive. So, instead of being supercells or these small areas where you had tight winds, this was, you know, crossing hundreds of miles with damaging winds. And so, easily peeling back metal roofs and that sort of thing, awnings, carports, trampolines, um but also power lines and trees. So, I think when sunrise happens here today, we start to break daylight in about 2 hours, about 5:30, I think there's going to be some wild scenes across Oklahoma. And this is still ongoing. So, I mean, look at the look at the storms. I'll just zoom out.
Going on from just approaching Tulsa now, headed down towards Henrietta, Holdenville, Ada, Sulphur, all the way back south of Lawton. We've had new storms that developed back in the northwest. Just for folks in northwest Oklahoma over there, a lot of folks in the dark right now. Um heavy intense storm over Vici, Arnett, and back near Lipscomb, Texas, Lipscomb County, Texas, that are going to be making their way into Ellis County, uh but not severe.
So, strongest part of the storm is this whole big bow. The whole thing is severe with damaging winds. Very little in the way of hail. Some of our trackers had some pea-sized hail, some dime-sized hail at times, but that um has been kind of the biggest. It's been just wind. So much tremendous amounts of wind.
>> on on the wind note, and you mentioned the the D word, derecho.
>> Yeah.
>> Um just looking uh so go to uh control room, go over to Links 3 real quick, cuz what I've got plotted here >> Oh, wow.
>> is the past 12 hours of radar. You can see where So, there were some storms in northwestern Kansas earlier. That was before it really became what the true complex is that, you know, evolved and and moved through Oklahoma. So, we'll see They're going to have to look at this and figure out what they want to define as like what this storm actually was, but it was at least several hundred miles of uh damaging winds reports and destruction from Kansas all the way into Oklahoma.
At least 357. And I just wanted to brush up on what the definition was for derecho, and it's 240 miles.
>> So, this should >> Absolutely.
>> I think qualify and you know, they'll look at it to make sure, but uh >> Yeah.
>> what I'm looking at right now, I think it's >> That is yeah, classic. Classic derecho, which is just a uh a term given to complexes like this that can do such expansive damage. Go ahead, Jeremy. I can hear you. Go ahead.
>> I see there's a firecracker staying here, too, that also flipped over.
>> one.
>> And I I seen one in Blanchard, and then there's another one back on the other side of this other store tent.
>> Okay.
>> It looks dis- disarrayed. I'll go check it out. But yeah, this was this really caused a lot of damage the storm did.
Back to you, Lacy.
>> Man, you just hate to see that, you know? And that's that's just one small portion.
That's just one one thing that we're going to be seeing so common because those things I mean it didn't take 60 mile an hour wind can topple over those fireworks stands, but they are up all across the region. Um and I think that's probably going to be one of the most common sites that we see. It's going to be interesting to see how many are still standing where we had so many strong wind gusts along that line.
Um so thank you Jeremy for bringing that. We'll keep compiling these damage locations and damage reports. Um throughout the night and throughout the morning. Still watching the severe threat. I want to take you back out to the tornado warning which now the storm has moved out of the tornado warned area. So that tornado warning has expired. Dustin, I know you're getting strong winds. You're probably still getting winds 50 to 60 miles per hour coming out of the west, uh but the tornado threat is now to the east of Dustin and that is now going into our sister station um KOTV in Tulsa, their viewing area and they're going to pick that up and take it all across Eufaula for folks in eastern Oklahoma. Now if for southern portions of Hughes County uh near Gertie and Stewart, you're about to get the wind if it's not there already. You're going to hear it coming out of the west and northwest 60 miles per hour, maybe some gusts to 70.
And then down near Sulphur uh that's the circulation that's been very broad that we've watched all night long. There it is. Uh north of Sulphur starting to see shear rate ramp up just a little bit on 177 maximum rotation showing it uh still pretty broad no tornado warning with it but that's going to be one of the most intense portions of that line as far as the wind goes because when you start to get a circulation you can kind of get wrapping around winds that can bump up the velocity some. So there could be winds 70 maybe 75 coming through Sulphur, but I haven't seen reports that high. In fact, let me just look down there. Winds 45 to 55. So in general general winds are below severe limits, but there's going to be pockets where it's stronger. It's those isolated areas like just north of Sulphur where the winds are stronger. So currently it is 3:32. We have no active tornado warnings going. We still have severe storms for sure. Trackers that are still out on the damage and we're going to start our newscast here in less than 30 minutes. We're going to take a quick break, regroup. We're watching this. We're not going anywhere. Stay with News 9. We'll keep you advised.
