Tinnitus spikes are temporary periods where suffering increases and progress feels lost, but they are a normal part of the habituation process; during spikes, the strategy should shift from trying to habituate to focusing on coping, and once spikes end, progress resumes from where it left off without starting over.

Tinnitus Spikes Don't Mean You're Starting Over
Added:I want to talk for a minute about tinnitus spikes. All tinnitus sufferers experience spikes where their suffering increases and it suddenly feels like all your progress is gone.
Your anxiety goes up, your nervous system activates, and it can be extremely difficult to cope, especially if you were doing well before the spike happened. But spikes are just an unavoidable part of the habituation process that every single person who ever successfully found relief from their tinnitus had to go through along the way. And when they occur, you haven't gone backwards at all. You haven't lost any progress. Your progress is just on pause and the strategy temporarily needs to change from trying to habituate to trying to cope with this difficult moment. But all spikes end eventually. Every spike you've ever had ended eventually and you felt better at some point. And every spike you ever will have moving forward will end eventually, too. And once those spikes end, you will pick right back up with your progress where you left off and continue moving forward in your journey.
