How Is This Tree Still Alive?

[00:00:09]This is where it really is. That's a freaking beauty. Hey, Buds. So, there's a couple trees here that are literally so fantastic. That is an old growth tree right there at the top of a driveway.

[00:00:25]It's huge. And we should go look at it.

[00:00:27]I did tree work there. And then there's another one down here. So, let's see if we can see it.

[00:00:35]And then we'll go trapesing through the through the bushes. Luke, are you in?

[00:00:39]>> Yeah. Oh, yeah.

[00:00:39]>> And we'll go down here. It is a It's a monster. I've It's been on the channel once before. There she be. There she be.

[00:00:52]>> Do you know how special these things are, Luke? I call them residuals.

[00:00:57]the residual old growth trees that the loggers just they just knew they just leave it. Some people say, "Oh, it's for a seed tree."

[00:01:07]They weren't leaving seed trees, friends. They they they had to cut them by hand. So, the bark tells a story. And you learn about bark when you're a faller and a and a a lumber man or a woodman, a firewood guy somewhat, but you learn more about bark when you're in in just in the woods. There's Gary Oaks all through here. Hey, Luke. This is actually a neat little zone. Let's park and go down there. Hey.

[00:01:32]>> Yeah. Look at it, Luke.

[00:01:36]It's the these these things are atrociously amazing. Think about the size of that.

[00:01:44]This one's in rough shape, too, I think.

[00:01:46]But wait till we get down there. So, what happens is they can't feed the tops anymore, friends. They just they can't do it. They can't feed that tree anymore. The top dies, the bugs come in and it snaps in half in the wind. I want to share a couple things, Luke, while we're here. There's a ridge over there.

[00:02:06]You see that ridge? See that mossy null right there?

[00:02:10]>> Okay. And see all P? That's all our butus in there. You see it, Luke? All shiny bark trees? It's all our beautus.

[00:02:16]You can see maple, our beautus, big second growth fur. And there's the odd residual in here. And this this is called conglomerate stone. See this here? It's not sandstone. It's a conglomeration of everything. It's tough to break up. It's really hard once you get into it, but it's called conglomerate stone. That ridge uh it's the same ridge at Bartans.

[00:02:40]>> Yes, it is. Up in behind Bartans. You friends, you've seen that many times at Bartans. It's the same freaking one.

[00:02:46]It's really, really interesting.

[00:02:47]Vancouver Island. So, as you can see in here, Luke, we're on this conglomerate stone. We're on a grade. The trees are dry. There's lots of dead fur in here.

[00:02:58]Things are very dry. This is normal.

[00:03:01]It's normal stuff. Like, look behind you. Look, there's three dead trees and two there's two little Gary oaks. See them side by side? And a little arbutus right underneath that right right side dead fur there. It's just an interesting ecosystem, you know, like you can really see the fur is dry. So, I say we go down to that thing, Luke. And then there's a there's another one. It's actually incredible. And I worked in it. And it's it's actually right there. Let's go this way, Luke. And then we'll scurry down.

[00:03:30]These trees are special. They're very special. These are Gary Oaks. And And check this out. So, that's what I planted in my yard, friends. That's that one I planted in my yard that I share with you guys. Listen, we're all going to shrivel up and die, friends, one day.

[00:03:49]Get out into nature and enjoy God's green earth. Just get out there. There's so much to see. And you know, this world of technology of, you know, hey, listen, I Luke, we sit at home. We scroll. We we we're part of the internet now. Our whole lives are on the phone. But this is where it really is. This is where Get your kids outside, friends. Get your kids outside. I'm so grateful that that my boy works in the forest. I it just it it's just going to make him such a good man working in the forest and being outside. And Luke and Reed are outside all the time. That one is so old. It broke. The top broke out. There's the dead. There's the dead top laying right beside it from years ago. You know, there's a story for everything. And this conglomerate stone, I'm telling you, it's so tough. Now, this tree, think about all the firewood just standing here. Luke, look. Look at this. They came in and they did tree work in here. Dead snags.

[00:04:53]Somebody climbed that one and uh just because I I think this was it was becoming a hazard. Yeah, this is it here. So, I I done tree work here. Check out this freaking tree. It's got conchk in it. It's got, if I'm not mistaken, it's got conchks in it. I spiraled this tree. I worked in this tree years ago.

[00:05:15]This is the end of a road. Wait till you see this, friends. This is such a special tree. Yeah. Look the guys. Okay.

[00:05:23]So, here here it is. Here it is. Check out the story now. Big second growth, right? Big dirty second growth. But check this out. Look. Look at these. See these?

[00:05:38]Do do you know what this is here?

[00:05:41]>> Oh, cedar or is that fur?

[00:05:43]>> No, these are fur. Look it. See, I don't even like I don't like like even disturbing it to be honest with you, friends. The huckleberries grow off of these old growth stumps. They're their own e Well, look at the cedar growing right off of that stump, Luke.

[00:05:57]So, this is an old growth fur tree that was felled by hand. It was It went through burn victims. Here's here's some remaining bark on the back side. Look at it. And that right there is probably a springboard hole at some point. Like and there's another old grow stump right behind it. So that that's what this is.

[00:06:19]But wait until you see this. Look at this tree. Look at this thing.

[00:06:28]>> Right on their front yard.

[00:06:32]>> And you know what the nut nutty thing about this is? This comes up from Extension Road and it's like, yeah, there's conchk in it. You can see the conchks are in it, but it's it's still here. It's still clinging. It's a younger old growth this one. Younger old growth. I worked in this tree. If you look closely, I bet you you'll see cuts.

[00:06:54]You You'd have to look close, but I climbed this oh 25 years ago, maybe 20 20 years ago, probably. And I believe I went right to the top and and cleaned the deadwood out of it. I assessed it and I told them to leave it. I told them to leave it. They were thinking about cutting it. I don't think they'd have been able to, but I there's no yellow tag on it which says, "Oh my gosh, look at that four-door Comet. Do you know how badly I'd wanted one of those cars?" I got pulled over one night and I will be honest. I had a couple of Sasparellas.

[00:07:28]It was in my younger days and he had a twodoor 302 Comet Ford, no muffler, screamer, 1974. And we were at a party and he was he was he couldn't even walk.

[00:07:42]It was bad. And I was still together.

[00:07:45]We're talking 80s in the 80s. Anyway, I ended up driving us home from the party and we got pulled over. This is Straight Goods France. We got pulled over. I'm like, "Oh no." I literally called the the the police officer Oifer that night.

[00:08:01]Oifer. I said it to him. I remember it.

[00:08:03]Anyways, he freaking gave us a ride home. He said, "You park it." And he gave us a ride home. And that's what it was in the 80s. He did. He let us go. And uh that's a Mercury Comet, man.

[00:08:18]That thing's beautiful.

[00:08:20]>> Wonder if you'd sell it.

[00:08:21]>> That's the kind of ride I want. Dude, th those cars are fantastic. Looks like it hasn't moved in a while. What a great car. Okay, so it's good to see this thing still clinging. The wounds would be long healed up, but you can see a little school marm off the side. Oh, yeah. You You can see I deadwooded it in there on those first marms there.

[00:08:42]>> Yeah.

[00:08:42]>> So, it it's clinging. It's It's doing great. It's right at the end of the road, Luke. Right at the end of the road. It's kind of cool. I want that car. That thing's unreal. Okay, so now friends, let's go back up this way and cut straight through. I remember doing this before. Look at these fur trees, friends. Look, look at what happens to these things. Look at people come over here. They just destroy the bikes and the four quads and the thing. It just And the thing's just sitting here. Is that all you got? You punks? Is that that's it? Do you run over my roots? You think it's going to hurt me? No, it doesn't. Amazing. This is a big dirty second growth, but it's struggling. It it is. It's struggling. You can see she's got a swollen buttress.

[00:09:26]So, it's kind of funny. Through the years, Luke, I uh I remember I'd get into the odd patch where it was just it was beautiful ground and beautiful fallen and the timber was glorious. I'd come home, Wendy, I'd say, "Oh, we're in a nice patch." And she'd say to me, cuz she knows me, she'd say, "Honey, don't you ever get sad cutting trees?" And I'd say, "Yeah, I I'd say I I I do once in a while, babe. it. I I because I grew up in the forest, friends, in the forest.

[00:09:56]The playground, my playground was the forest. The beaches, like one of our videos a couple weeks ago, Luke, or a week ago, whatever it was now, down on the water and in the trees, and that was my playground. We were freaking jungle people, bush people, my brother and I.

[00:10:12]So, I remember coming down here. Now, if I'm not mistaken, we'll find a straight line on it.

[00:10:17]>> That's a pretty big one, too, there.

[00:10:18]That's a great big dirty stinking second growth. Yes, indeed it is. It's beautiful. So, maybe this will help us here. Oh, I I think I see it, Luke.

[00:10:26]Yeah, I do see it. Yeah, it's it's it's right dead square right there. So, we we could muscle through here. See See this here? This foliage, Luke.

[00:10:36]Arbutus. Beautiful. Beautiful arbutus.

[00:10:39]That's a big tree.

[00:10:42]Yeah, that that's a a really nice second growth. Look at that, Luke.

[00:10:46]>> That's crazy. That's a big freaking That's That's close to 4 foot on the stump right there. Second growth.

[00:10:54]Old second growth.

[00:10:57]So people say, you know, old growth, what what's old growth? What's second growth? Well, well, let's let's think about that for a minute. The last time they like this is all 100 to 150 year old wood. Actually, it is. It's 150 year old wood. 200 some of it. You know, they logged this friends. This was flat and now it's this. So that should tell us a little bit. This is all beautiful timber. Like really nice. And you see what happens to these maple trees. So remember that maple we looked at down on the beach there the other day?

[00:11:28]>> Yep.

[00:11:29]>> Trees grow, friends, if a tree grows in the bush and it's fighting for light, the maple, if this was to grow in a field, let's say, it would sprawl out and it would be as wide as it was tall.

[00:11:40]It would just be this massive ball, broadleaf maple. Look at this one. Not a freaking main leader on until 40 ft. You know, little suckers, but that's a broadleaf maple. And it just straight to the sky.

[00:11:55]You know, that thing's probably 80 ft.

[00:11:58]It's just interesting. There's another old growth stump right there. Look at that second growth, Luke.

[00:12:05]It's nice hemlock. They don't last. See this hemlock? Just garbage. Look at this maple. Look at the crown. The space it takes up in the crown, Luke. Isn't it a beauty?

[00:12:20]>> Mhm.

[00:12:21]>> Very nice tree. This is a super nice little ecosystem in here. It's on a steep grade. And look what we have right there, Luke. Sheangle right there. You can literally see through the top of the tree. It's got one school marm living off it.

[00:12:42]Yeah, we're belineing. This is really interesting here. What happens? There's root rod in here. This is cedar.

[00:12:50]People's property run down to here. See what happens. Look at this. This is very interesting to me. So, I wonder if there's a That's going to be a tough go.

[00:12:59]And it's straight maple suckers and bramble. It looks to me that we might have get lucky here, Luke. Down here.

[00:13:06]Now, where did that thing disappear to, Luke? It's over here. Yeah, there's Buddy's yard. Look at this thing.

[00:13:16]And you wonder why all those little baby maples are there. So, we're coming up on this old growth now. Look at this big maple.

[00:13:30]Oh, yeah. We're at this tree now.

[00:13:34]So, I I remember working at this guy's property. Yeah. Look at the size of this thing. Here we are. I've been here before. This is absolutely ridiculous.

[00:13:44]It's probably holding this whole bank together. Look at this tree, Luke.

[00:13:48]And and and you see you see this?

[00:14:01]>> It It doesn't even make sense, does it, Luke?

[00:14:04]>> No, it doesn't. like it it just doesn't make sense.

[00:14:09]So this I know for a fact 800 5 to 800 easy.

[00:14:19]Think about that for just a second.

[00:14:22]I'm 57. I knew my grandfather. I didn't know his grandfather or his grandfather or his grandfather or his grandfather or his grandfather.

[00:14:32]So, this tree, it's just mind-blowing to me. I know I get a little goofier than the next guy about stuff like this, but it they're they're just amazing. They've been through fires. You can't burn them.

[00:14:45]You know, these old growth, I'm surprised there's no Yeah. See, there's a burn victim here. The bark's all burnt. There's nails in it with, you know, it's it's just Look. Okay. Here's here's what I'm talking about, Luke.

[00:15:00]You'll see you'll see the conchk.

[00:15:03]>> Y >> you see that little conchk there >> on the right? Yep.

[00:15:06]>> Okay. So, that's that's rot, right?

[00:15:09]>> But the bark is easily it it's easily a foot thick. Foot thick. Easy. You come over here and you look at this. Look at that.

[00:15:27]Look at that shank off to your right about two feet above your head. That great big shank of bark.

[00:15:36]>> This wild, right?

[00:15:37]>> Yeah.

[00:15:39]>> The ground here, especially in there, there's something up with all those suckery little maples.

[00:15:47]I bet you there's stumps in there like mad. And I don't know what's going on.

[00:15:51]There's a property line right there. But Luke, this here. And and we're not even in the tree. Th this from here to there is 8 to 10 inches.

[00:16:01]>> Yeah.

[00:16:01]>> And we're not even into the like it it it's honestly it's incredible. Worth the run, right, Luke?

[00:16:08]>> Yeah.

[00:16:09]>> You know, friends, whenever I do a video like this on the channel, it really, for some reason, it seems to grab people, doesn't it, Luke?

[00:16:15]>> They like these videos, and you know, I like being around these trees. So, it it's by itself, Luke. This just just there's that one up the hill which is not nearly as old as this guy. And here it sits all by itself. Friends, this stuff's wild. Look at how tall that thing is standing next to that second grow stuff. It's still towering. Just amazing. This stuff runs kind of deep for me. I think any logger, you know, has looked at the history of their areas. And look at that monster. They're just so special. And to get near them, it almost brings me back to the steam era of logging. It's just such a neat thing for me. Any industry has its history. Look at Look at this thing, friends. It's completely hollow. Trees have a cambium layer and it's on the outside and that thing will go hollow and hollow. So, it won't be there forever. Things will change. But just look at this thing. That school marm off to the left and a little one off to the right. These loggers knew what to leave back in the day. What a glorious sight this is. I hope you enjoy this, friends.

[00:17:38]>> It is. That one's a little bit bigger, but yes. Very same vintage.

[00:17:42]>> Same vintage. 100%. But they left this tree because you can see why it's goofy.

[00:17:48]It It is It's goofy, friends. It's not It They They wouldn't take this tree logging. They wouldn't take it. It's on a grade. So, everything went downhill, right? Everything went downhill. Here's another reason. It's leaning uphill like mad.

[00:18:03]>> The tree when they log this area, friends, I'm telling you, these loggers, when you got to cut stuff down by hand, you know. Yeah. It's pretty amazing.

[00:18:11]This thing's leaning up the hill hard.

[00:18:13]So they would have had to gone sidehill or something. But but they leave stuff like this because there's nothing really in it.

[00:18:21]It's good to get the body moving out here, isn't it, Luke?

[00:18:23]>> Mhm.

[00:18:24]>> Heavy cone year for the first. Yeah.

[00:18:26]This is an interesting kind of a zone here. There's that maple.

[00:18:34]See, here's here's a hemlock. There's one lone hemlock right there.

[00:18:40]Beautiful maple grove. Worth the road, eh?

[00:18:49]>> Yep.

[00:18:50]Look at this. Luke rigging. See that? That thing too. You can tell that it was rotten. Loop. You can tell by the bark. It's in real bad shape.

[00:19:18]See, and if you get outside, get the heart rate up like we're panting a little bit right now. I am. I don't know about Lukie, but coming up that great.

[00:19:26]>> It's good for you, friends. Getting outside. And it's not like you're at the gym. You're working your legs, your lungs. You're outside. There's another old grow stump right there, Luke. That's an old grow stump. They don't last like the cedars. You notice those cedars got you can totally see the springboards in the cedars.

[00:19:42]>> Fur don't last like that. That's the toll tape. But look, Luke, look at this.

[00:19:49]Look at this root system peeling off the back of this thing. Pretty incredible, right?

[00:19:54]>> It really is. And the tree is healthy as can be. Healthy as can be. Doug fur's Doug fur is amazing. You know, friends, I I urge you do a little research on Doug Douglas fur and its structural uh health. It's one of the most uh structural timbers for timber framing in the world. So, if you're building a a post and beam house, it's dug fur. It's not cedar. Cedar is not a structural timber. Did you know that? You can use it outdoors and stuff and in pergolas and this and that, but not for building homes, not for like structure. Depends on what you're doing, but Doug fur is the structure. It's warm loop. Okay, back up to the pickup. And as we pan back, we see a dry meadow. Young furs growing up.

[00:20:43]Old pieces of little leftover trees. This was all logged, right? I know, friends. I uh I will always chase these trees. Uh I'm hoping to hook up with Regge Coats. Reg has got a an enjoyment for big trees and and little excursions, too. He took Hogan and I on one years ago. I'm hoping to hook up with Reg. Reg, if you're watching, it'd be great to to hook up maybe this year or next and take me up to that great big cedar that you've been talking about. But but that one there, Luke, you really don't know how long they're going to last. You know what I mean? Like, it's a it's a humongous structure and an entity living on its foliage. That's what it is. It's living on its foliage. There's one in cedar, too. It's an old It's literally living on one limb.

[00:21:32]>> It is absolutely crazy. And then and one day it will be gone. It will be gone.

[00:21:37]So, that's why I like coming to these once in a while. This is a this is a great little excursion down in here. And I wanted Luke to see this one, too, cuz Luke's been on a few of these with me now. Look how beautiful that is across there. Luke, there's a home up on the bank there. I've done work all through here all through the years. That's that ridge I was talking about or beautus and that cineabar valleys down there.
