Lipoproteins - Types, composition and its chemistry

[00:00:22]Don't worry. Just aboard the ship along with me to sail across the lipoproteins and all your doubts will be cleared as you stay with me.

[00:00:32]Here is a ship that has set a course to the far island.

[00:00:37]There are some people like you who wants to board the ship.

[00:00:41]Here comes [music] the tummy giant first to the ship.

[00:00:45]That was followed by a cheese head, a muscular hen, and a polar head. As the journey begins, the ship [music] was huge, more spacious, and with many tummy giants who were dominating and controlling the ship.

[00:01:05]Suddenly, the ship went into a very low tide [music] and its size gets smaller than before. Using this opportunity of very low tide, the cheese head, polar head, and the muscular hen called out their fellow mates and pushed a few tummy giants out of the ship. After this happened in the very low tide, the other tummy giants made a safe boat for 100 and attached [music] it with their ship.

[00:01:35]After which, from the area of very low tide, the ship entered the area of low tide. Here, [music] in the low tide area, the ship's size got further reduced and the number of tummy giants were less. When no one expected, again, the cheese head pushed many more tummy giants [music] into the low tide and now more than half of the ship is filled with cheese [music] heads only. These cheese heads started to dominate the ship in the low tide area.

[00:02:10]But [music] still the safe boat for 100 is along with the ship even in the low tide area. Suddenly a high tide hits the ship and it became too small. Now the muscular hen and the polar head became good friends [music] and they used this time to dominate the boat in the high tide area. They pushed few tummy gents and almost half of the cheese heads out of the boat and they want to dominate the high tide area further so they called most of their fellow mates to come and sit in the boat. Because of which the boat is heavily populated and no space but there is a life boat for all. But last all had a chance to dominate the ship.

[00:02:58]The only problem is as the tide increases the size of the ship was reduced consistently.

[00:03:05]Now let's relate this sailing experience [music] with the chemistry composition various types of lipoproteins.

[00:03:13]Usually lipids are hydrophobic and requires a boat to travel in the bloodstream.

[00:03:19]>> [music] >> So it takes the help of a protein.

[00:03:22]This combination of lipid and protein is called as lipoprotein.

[00:03:27]Now the tummy gents are the triglycerides enter the ship along with cholesterol, protein and phospholipids.

[00:03:36]All were sailing in the same ship where the ship was a large and not densely populated with more amount of TG triglycerides.

[00:03:47]Such ship is called as chylomicrons which is the first lipoprotein. Means chylomicrons are rich in triglycerides.

[00:03:57]Very low tide area indicates very low density lipoprotein.

[00:04:02]Where the triglycerides is going out of the ship, VLDL, and gradually the concentration of cholesterol increases in the ship. VLDL is the second type of lipoprotein. The lifeboat for 100 indicates ApoB-100, which is present on VLDL.

[00:04:23]Next, the ship enters the low tide area indicates low density lipoprotein, which is the third type of lipoprotein.

[00:04:33]Here, more than 50% of the ship is filled only with cholesterol, which means this low density lipoprotein, LDL, is rich in cholesterol. And it still have the lifeboat, so LDL also have ApoB-100, like [music] VLDL. Here, the high tide area indicates high density lipoprotein, which is the other type of lipoprotein. The size got shrink. That means it is the smallest lipoprotein. In this high tide, that is in high density lipoprotein, the concentration of protein [music] and phospholipids are increased, and there is no space. So, HDL is highly dense.

[00:05:20][music] Here, the lifeboat is for all, which indicates the presence of ApoA in HDL. Here is the final summary of what we have discussed now. As we see the size, chylomicrons are larger in size, like the bigger ship, and the HDL is like the small ship in high tide area.

[00:05:40]If we look at the density, HDL in the high tide area is highly dense.

[00:05:45]Whereas, the chylomicrons, the big ship, having a lot of space. And look at the concentration of triglyceride, which is rich in chylomicrons. [music] And phospholipids and proteins are rich in HDL.

[00:06:00]Look at the cholesterol.

[00:06:01]>> [music] >> LDL is always highly rich in cholesterol. That is why in lipid profile, we are very much concerned about the LDL cholesterol.

[00:06:11]Whose increased concentration can predispose to atherosclerosis.
