The GD01 is a brilliant engineering showcase that successfully bridges the gap between sci-fi imagination and mechanical reality. However, at $650,000, it remains an expensive proof of concept searching for a practical purpose beyond its own technical bravado.

Unitree’s GD01 Mecha Robot Looks Ready for the Future! Costs $650,000Hinzugefügt:
Unitree has just revealed something that looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie. The company’s new GD01 is a massive mecha-style robot that can switch between walking on two legs and moving on four. It seriously gives off real-life Transformers vibes, and the video demo has already grabbed a lot of attention online.
The GD01 is built by Chinese robotics company Unitree, and this machine is designed as a transformable civilian transport vehicle. The robot is made from high-strength alloy and weighs around 1,102 pounds, or 500 kilograms, with a pilot inside. That’s a huge machine, and it starts at about 3.9 million yuan, which comes out to roughly $573,000.
In the demo video, the GD01 is shown carrying a pilot inside a cockpit mounted in its torso.
Unitree founder Wang Xingxing is actually seen sitting inside during the demonstration, which really shows how enormous this thing is. Standing upright, the robot reaches around 1.6 times the height of an average adult, making it tower over people nearby.
What makes the GD01 really stand out is how quickly it can transform. One moment it’s walking in a humanoid stance, and seconds later it folds its legs, shifts its balance, and turns into a four-legged machine ready to move across rough terrain. The transition happens without outside help, and the robot keeps moving smoothly even on uneven ground.
The machine also shows off some serious power in the video. At one point, it punches through a stack of bricks, showing how much force its structure can handle. Even during heavy impacts, the frame stays stable and rigid. Unitree seems focused on proving that the robot is not just for show, but capable of handling demanding movement and physical tasks.
The company hasn’t shared many technical details yet, so there’s still a lot we don’t know about the system. The full specs, battery performance, speed, and real-world applications are still under wraps for now. Even so, the short one-minute clip was enough to get people talking across social media.
Unitree also released a safety warning alongside the announcement, reminding users not to attempt dangerous modifications or extreme experiments with humanoid robots. The company says this technology is still in an early experimental phase and still has limitations for personal use.
This reveal comes shortly after Unitree launched another attention-grabbing robot, a low-cost upper-body humanoid model starting at just 26,900 yuan, or around $4,290. That robot features modular bases and up to 31 degrees of freedom, showing that the company is pushing hard in multiple directions at once.
The GD01 may still be experimental, but it’s one of the clearest signs yet that giant walking machines are slowly moving from science fiction into the real world.
