Winds gust over 60 mph during Monday monsoon rain in Phoenix

[00:00:00]Here's the map that is just really impressive as far as these wind gusts.

[00:00:04]And when I say impressive, I'm not meaning that in a positive light whatsoever. 68 mph wind gust. That's over at Phoenix Sky Harbor. That hit at 8:42 p.m. That dropped the visibility down to about 3 miles. That's what probably indicated just before that, that aviation weather warning. and Jared uh always our aviation expert on the desk. Just reported that Sky Harbor is now takeoffs are back uh happening live over at Sky Harbor. We're not sure what kind of backup that aviation warning and that ground stop happened for how many flights, but we'll keep on top of that.

[00:00:41]I know we've got a crew heading over there to kind of see what the impact was at at Phoenix Sky Harbor because we just take a breath here. 68 mph winds. Okay, that's 6 m an hour off hurricane force winds. Just to give you some perspective, that is some very powerful straight line strong winds. Not sure if there's any damage in and around the airport. I know there's a lot of warehouses there. There's a lot of things that are outside. Think about the baggage handlers. Think about everything out there on the aprons, the tarmacs, all of the uh commercial airlines out there, all of the private uh planes over there near Cutter Aviation. That is a lot of multi-million dollar equipment outside dealing with a 68 mph wind gust.

[00:01:31]Now, that is not sustained. That happened in a couple minute period, just about a minute or so, and then it died down into the 50s and 40s, and now it's below 40 miles an hour. But again, 68 mph wind gust tonight at 8:42 PM dropping the visibility to about three miles. Not to be outdone, Chandler 54 mph wind gust. That's at their airport.

[00:01:56]Mesa Gateway 44. Mesa Falcon Field 53 51 at Scottsdale Air Park, 46 up at Deer Valley. They were also at one point under a aviation warning. So, let's take a look at that outflow boundary that caused all of these problems. Those light blue boxes are those aviation warnings in place for Deer Valley and Phoenix Sky Harbor. If I stop the radar and show you where that outflow boundary is right now, it's already west of the 303. That's how quickly that outflow boundary came in. And yes, there is rain still behind it, popping up new thunderstorms, but that outflow is really rapidly already out of the far west valley. Again, west of the loop 303. So, what we have left is any of these popup showers behind it. Now, when you see the end of that radar loop right there, there's not a lot of activity.

[00:02:53]It's very spotty. It's west of the beine. It's also north of the Carefree Highway. So things are actually settling down quickly behind that outflow boundary. But when when I say that there's still a possibility for these storms to redevelop uh as that outflow boundary kind of acts like a shovel or a scoop. It forces that moist unstable heavy air. Oh, look at that live right there on uh your screen. Let me see if I can get that uh pulled up. That blinking pink box from Tonapaw all the way down to Hilipan and Kasa Grande. Let me uh query that. Yep, there it is. It's a dust storm advisory. Just under a half million people. That goes until 10:15.

[00:03:35]So that means if you know anybody that is traveling uh out there tonight on east westbound on I 10 out in the Tonapa area, Goodyear, that is going to be some pretty low visibility. Same thing along the Interstate 8 from Kasa Grande over to Hila Ben. And then look at how far this goes down, guys. This is how how far of a uh gust front this is. It goes all the way down to Morirana and then deep into Panal uh Puma County. Let me just make sure it's the same one. No, it's a separate one for those folks.

[00:04:08]That goes until 1000 p.m. tonight. A dust storm advisory. Again, this dust is blowing from east to west at this point.

[00:04:16]So, let's uh let's give another uh look at where the current uh rain is at this point and then let's move on to our big headline. Late week heat. Guys, there is a heat watch that will likely turn into a warning. So, we are first alerting for five straight days for highs anywhere from 110 to 114. And we are expecting a very high heat risk for the valley because our due points are not going to be dropping off and our humidity levels, they're not going to be dropping off much uh at all. So that means it's hot.

[00:04:52]It's extremely sticky and highs are well above the average for this time of year.

[00:04:57]So we've got Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, first alert weather days for extreme heat. Look for that watch to pump up into or to be updated to a heat warning from Thursday morning through Monday night. Guys, it looks like you guys are working on some power outages.

[00:05:15]And when we have wind gusts in excess of 50 plus miles an hour, we probably got to consider all the power outages across the valley.

[00:05:22]>> Yeah, seen we've got about 9,000 in total when you consider SRP and APS tonight. Of the 9,000, about 7,000 are SRP customers. So, we're showing you the SRP outage map here, and you can see uh the East Valley is looking pretty good in terms of power outages there. Most of them are centered. Uh there's one near the Desert Desert Botanical Garden, another a large cluster in the Builtmore area, and uh one west of the I17 in West Phoenix as well. And uh on the APS map, which we don't have pulled up, but I could see it, there's a big cluster of outages in downtown Phoenix, sort of along Roosevelt Row as well. Um, so that's what we're looking at in terms of power outages tonight. Both SRP and APS.

[00:06:01]Again, a combined about 9,000 customers without power as a result of those strong winds that moved through in the last hour.
