The United States has announced a fundamental reset of NATO, requiring European allies to take greater responsibility for their own defense by meeting 5% GDP defense spending targets, while the US will no longer automatically provide key military assets like aircraft carriers and fighter jets, signaling a shift toward a more balanced partnership where Europe leads its own defense under Article 5 collective defense principles.

U.S Calls For NATO Reset, Hegseth Says Europe Must Take Greater Responsibility | U.S Defence | N18G
Added:The United States has called for a fundamental reset of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, urging the alliance to return to its roots as a hardline military block with stronger conventional capabilities. Speaking at NATO headquarters in Brussels, US Defense Secretary Pete Hexter said European allies must take greater responsibility for the defense of their own continent as Washington reassesses its global military commitments. Hexter said the United States would be open and direct, both privately and publicly, about which allies are failing to meet the defense obligations, underlining that credibility within the alliance depends on burden sharing. The remarks came as NATO confirmed that a reduction in US contributions to the alliance's crisis response forces has taken immediate effect. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said other member states are stepping up to fill the gaps left by the US move. Rutte clarified that the decision is part of NATO's contingency planning, stressing that in the event of a real conflict, all allies, including the United States, would deploy maximum available capabilities to defend the alliance. At a meeting of NATO defense ministers, Hexter pushed for what he described as a new phase for the 32-nation alliance, informally referred NATO 3.0, aimed at rebuilding deterrence in Europe after decades of post-Cold War downsizing. The United States has already signaled that it would no longer automatically provide certain key military assets, including aircraft carriers, refueling planes, and fighter jets if a NATO ally comes under attack.
European allies and Canada are now working on plans to compensate for those potential shortfalls. Washington maintains that the shift is driven by the need to prepare for multiple simultaneous conflicts, particularly amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region involving China. While the US remains NATO's largest military power and has no plans to withdraw its nuclear weapons from Europe, the changes signal a recalibration of America's role under NATO's collective defense principle, known as Article 5. In effect, the message from Washington is clear. Europe must now take the lead in securing its own defense, even as NATO seeks to adapt to a more volatile global security landscape.
