International leaders often engage in diplomatic credit-claiming, where they take credit for successful negotiations while deflecting blame for failures onto others, as demonstrated by President Trump's approach at the G7 Summit where he praised his Iran agreement while pre-emptively blaming Vice President J.D. Vance if the deal failed.

Trump's G7 Summit: Diplomacy or Opportunism in International Relations?
Added:President Donald Trump has wrapped up his time here at the G7 Summit after arriving on a bit of a high note. And that's just one of about three takeaways from the president's time here in the French Alpine town of Evian, France.
The president arrived feeling in good spirits. He had earned the support of his fellow G7 leaders for the tentative agreement that he struck with Iran and the war. Just weeks ago, the president had been criticizing these very same leaders because they refused to join the United States and Israel in bombing Iran in order to get it to give up his nuclear ambitions. But instead at a news conference closing out his participation in the summit, Trump spoke of the great unity that he had found here at the G7.
Two, Trump stayed for the entire three-day summit. At last year's summit in Canada, the president spent just one day there before he flew back to Washington.
Part of the reason he stayed is that Macron invited him to a dinner after the summit at the opulent Palace of Versailles just outside of Paris. Trump said it himself, he's a fan of beautiful things and he said he didn't have anything better to do anyway after the summit than fly back home to Washington.
So he stayed. And three, Trump seems to have figured out who he'll blame if things with Iran don't work out according to his plan. Trump is famous for liking to take credit when things go well and avoiding blame when they don't.
Vice President J.D. Vance has been instrumental in helping to negotiate the tentative agreement with Iran. Asked at the news conference if there is a scenario where he would feel like a genius if things work out with Iran or he would he look for someone to blame if they don't work out, Trump responded that he liked the idea that he would take the credit if things go well, but that if they didn't go well, he would blame J.D. and that J.D. quote better be careful.
