Vote buying in Nigerian elections should not be criminalized because it is already widespread, and the real problem is election rigging; additionally, Nigerians exhibit a scarcity mentality where they prioritize immediate material benefits (like bread) over long-term policy benefits, which explains why some voters choose candidates who offer small incentives over those who invest in proper governance and policy development.

Is APC Sharing Bread In Ekiti?
Added:Hello everyone.
I'm sure you you I'm sure you saw you seen that video, right? Where bread is being thrown at people and they are running and they are picking those bread. You know, they are everything.
And a lot of people a lot of things have been said about that video. But I can tell you that video is a video that is wickedly smart.
It's a video that that that shows the reality of Nigeria. And one of the things for me and I I know a lot of people will find this controversial is the fact that vote buying should be decriminalized. You understand? There's no need of punishing people because they decided to sell their vote. Yeah, somebody might say some people will take advantage of it. Some people will use it. But they're already doing it. The only people who are suffering are people who are law-abiding, who are following the law, and are not doing the wrong the wrong thing. So, if those who already they are doing it, why don't you just leave it? Let people come out I don't For me, I don't I don't have issue with vote buying. The one I really have issue with is rigging. If somebody decide that they're going to collect money for their vote, fine and good. That's the person's business. I absolutely have no business with that person. And I can tell you something, the people who are ready to sell their vote are smaller in number than the people who are not ready to sell their vote. That's the reason why when you go to you see this election, many people don't turn up. So, a few people who want to now, you know, turn it into a transactional thing, business, they then go there and collect collect the money. So, and at the end of the day for me, what I really see is that people end up spending so much of their money.
They end up doing all the right thing, campaigning the way campaigns should be, doing campaign materials, policy documents, you know, spending their hard-earned resources on all the right things that need to be done. And at the end of the day, some people just sit down, they relax, they don't do anything, they just go on election day, and then they then go there and just start giving 3,000, 5,000, whatever thousand. And they end up some of them end up winning. And then you you see EFCC and all of that paying lip service. Sometimes they arrest people, sometimes they don't, sometimes this. You just wonder at what stage do they do the things that they they're supposed to do. Is it that they are not seeing those people who are doing it, or is it that they are not or they're deliberately not or they're on seeing the people, you know, who are doing it?
So, as far as I'm concerned, let let it let it just let leave the leave it. Just the way that they've removed the forgery. Forgery is no longer one of the things that you can do in the electoral tribunal, one of the things that you can What was the thing? Go against I'm missing the word now. Go against someone who who has a a case, for example, after the election. You say, "Oh, this person forged forged so-and-so." It's no longer one of the reasons why one can go in.
So, more or less, they've sort of like decriminalized forgery in politics. So, that's that's that's the simple thing that they they have done. But let me just tell you the basic thing about this whole thing. This that whole thing that you saw You see here?
There's There's a weird How do I put it?
There is a weird kind of uh uh DNA in Nigerians, right? And I don't know whether it has to do with our education, it has to do with the fact that uh we we have been browbeaten all because of the militarization all over the years. There has been, you know, this this mindset that has been put in people, which is anything, even if it's one cover. You see those people that collected that bread?
They would rather vote that person that gave them that bread than someone else that has been paying school fees for their children.
There's this insatiable greed. It's almost like, you know, what I I call it um this uh this There's this mentality.
Usually, I I call it that where people feel that they can't get enough. You understand? Scarcity. Yeah, scarcity mentality. So, it's almost like, "Oh, I can't This is the only thing. Let me grab grab grab." That's how you see some people we go to wedding or party or anything. They will eat. They will collect collect food. Collect empty plates if they can. And then they will carry it home and they will end up throwing it away.
They won't eat it.
Meanwhile, there are people there that didn't get. So, it's almost like, "Let me grab grab grab grab grab." That's the reason why you'll be You'll be on You'll be on the road, too. You see someone, the moment you want to cross road or enter, the person will speed up.
Or some, the moment you want to They are going quite slow and you want to overtake them. They will just increase.
I used to laugh. I would just slow down.
You can't be going You know what I used to tell people? I said, "You don't know where the person is rushing to. You cannot be rushing with someone. Maybe that person is rushing to go to the hospital or is rushing to be rushing to be admitted in the hospital or rushing to the mortuary. You could or want to rush quickly and get to his grave. You will come follow and they rush, they go there. Nobody there. I usually be like "Man, I see somebody like that, just slow down." I just go to when the road is clear enough where you cannot use your car to block this thing now.
Then I'll just go and do that overtaking. So, that's scarcity, that mentality of grab, grab, grab. You see people that when a politician eh, someone will come to you, they'll come and ask for money. You'll give them money, maybe 50k, 100k. The person will like eh, "But government will announce that they are giving 15, 15,000." If the person gets it there, it will be like it's if they got 1.5 million. The same person that was looking at your own 50, 100,000 and thinking that eh, I mean while this might be someone that has been coming over time oh, be like eh, "Is this only what you can do?" Me now, I beg, I don't even want Please, don't even call me and ask me for money.
I'm not going to give you.
I've gotten to a place I'm not I Please, meet those people who are in office, those people who are supposed to serve you. Because like I said to someone the other day, I said, "You want me to die?"
Person has to. Right, you wake up If somebody wake you in the middle of the night, you say oh, he he he's bro he's so so and so next he just died. They're going to bring And it turns out to be all lies. Or oh, the father just had an accident or they had operation. The one that is very common is my wife is CS.
And when you actually do your finding, there's no wife in CS.
There's one that called me, if you see that guy, he was crying, his father just had diabetic shock, he's in clinical, he's in hospital, he's in this. And I said, "No wahala."
But me, I've learned I'm not even going to give anybody any money. Okay, which hospital? Can you give us the details?
Let's go and pay the Because I want to pay the hospital directly. Let me give you the this thing. And when you go there, there's nothing like that.
There's no patient like that. Are you kidding me? Now I myself I don't they do again. Please, go and meet the people that are supposed to be, you know, doing this thing for you. But the actual Nigerian mentality, like I said earlier, is just that that person that is giving that bread you might be looking at it and laughing at them. That's what they believe. That's why me oh I've said it oh even though when I was doing my campaign I said it and I I said look you give to everybody what it is that they want and they can understand. For those who want policies you give policy documents do your policy document type it very well hand it over to them. I'm going to do this I'm going to do that I'm going to do this I'm going to do that. For those who want bread please preach do your bread you see this loaf of bread don't don't say THAT THEY ARE APC AND THEY ARE PDP SPEAK to the people in the language that they understand. Me that's do your bread that loaf of bread they do it. You see that paper they put on on top put it put your picture your logo your everything give it to them. That's the language of why you giving policy to document to somebody that does not understand that's not interested in your policies.
Give them that bread there let them think. Whatever it is at the end of the day when you get in there give them a life for them to now understand that ah all this while they've been suffering this is what they can get because right now all these talk we are talking some of them can't see it because they can't imagine it their mentality they've never they can't all their life they've not seen anything like good governance until they see it like the people in Abia now all these things that Alex Otti is doing if you were telling them all of these things in 2022 2021 some of them most of them will not be able to understand. But now that they've seen it you don't need to tell them in fact they are the ones now teaching us all of these things. Thank you so much for watching.
