Frederri Valentine, a French bioarchchaeologist affiliated with the CNRS, whose comparative work on Pacific skeletal populations had ranged across multiple island groups before engaging with the New Zealand material, contributed analysis that situated the Walbar individuals within the broader bioarchchaeological record of Polynesian expansion. Her work underscored something that the isotopic and genetic data had pointed toward, but that skeletal morphology could approach from a different angle. That the Walbar population was not a random cross-section of eastern Polynesian demographic diversity, but a group whose biological characteristics were consistent with a relatively small founding population or a series of closely related founding groups. Rather than large-scale migration from multiple unconnected source communities, the colonization of New Zealand as Hayalbar was allowing it to be reconstructed looked like a small number of purposeful voyages rather than a broad demographic movement. The people who founded New Zealand's human population came in groups small enough that the individuals buried at Walbar may have known each other or known of each other before the voyages that brought them to the South Island's northeastern coast. The site itself remains protected under New Zealand heritage legislation and ongoing monitoring by Rangitane and heritage authorities continues to assess the condition of the inground archaeological deposits. Sea level fluctuation and coastal erosion present long-term challenges to the preservation of what remains unexavated. The collaborative framework established for the 2009 to 2010 work has been cited in subsequent discussions about research protocols at other New Zealand sites with sensitive ancestral associations. What Walbar ultimately demonstrated through the convergence of isotopic chemistry, ancient DNA, radiocarbon dating, material culture analysis, and a decadesl long process of institutional negotiation was that the founding of New Zealand's human population was not an abstraction recoverable only through inference and typological comparison. It was an event that had left direct physical traces in the ground at the mouth of the Hayra River, in the bodies of people who had crossed the Pacific and stopped there, and in the objects they had carried with them from a world that no longer exists in the form they knew it.
