Tamil Nadu Assembly Unites Against Mekedatu Dam, Karnataka Hits Back

[00:00:00]News now from Tamil Nadu where the assembly unanimously adopted a resolution opposing Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu dam project across the Cauvery River. The resolution urges the center not to grant any technical, environmental, or other approvals to the project and calls on the commission not to process Karnataka's detailed project report. Chief Minister Vijay said the Cauvery basin is already a water deficit basin and that no new project should be taken up. Uh meanwhile, Udhayanidhi Stalin, who's leader of opposition, and AIADMK uh EPS both welcomed the resolution reflecting broad political unity in Tamil Nadu against the project.

[00:00:38]Responding to an anti-Mekedatu resolution, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge maintained that Karnataka is not seeking to reduce anyone's water share, adding that both states are free to pursue their legal options.

[00:03:05]They should have approached the tribunal Kaveri water tribunal and asked them to intervene and they should have gone to Karnataka and speak with the Chief Minister and say that this is unlawful because it is unlawful.

[00:03:19]No water can be stopped to the lower riparian rivers for any river body. It is an international law.

[00:03:27]If they are building a dam and not releasing water to Tamil Nadu is against the international law. All those things they should have told. They should have acted on this. Just a resolution is not enough because many resolutions were passed in this house.

[00:03:43]A resolution is not enough. Some strong action has to be taken.
