What Archaeologists Found Beneath Turkey Changes Human History
Added:Above the ground, Capidoshia looks like something dreamed rather than built.
Eroded volcanic spires, the famous fairy chimneys, hot air balloons drifting over a landscape that seems entirely shaped by wind and time. But in the year 1963, in a Turkish town called Darren Kuyu, a man swinging a sledgehammer through the wall of his own basement broke into something no one expected. Behind the stone lay a room. Behind the room, a tunnel. And behind that, descending 18 stories into solid rock, a city carved for 20,000 people. No one alive could say who cut the first chamber or when.
That silence matters more than it sounds.
One way of reading it leaves the timeline of civilization exactly where the textbooks put it. Another rewrites the opening chapter entirely. And the answer, if there is one, is buried in rock that was shaped by taking it away.
The man was only renovating his home.
What he found instead was a hole that seemed to have no bottom. One room opened into a tunnel, and that tunnel opened into another, and the deeper anyone followed, the more impossible the place became. This was Darren Cuyu, and it descended nearly 85 m into the earth.
as many as 18 levels stacked one beneath the other with room enough for 20,000 people to live entirely out of sight. It was not a cellar. It was a city and it had everything a city needs. Stables for livestock on the upper floors where animals could be kept without fouling the air below. Presses for wine and oil.
Sellers for storage. Kitchens. Chapels cut straight from the rock. More than 50 ventilation shafts threaded the whole complex, one of them running 55 m from the surface to the depths, feeding fresh air to the lowest chambers.
wells reached down to water that never saw daylight. And at the passage between levels sat great round doors of stone, half a ton each, that could be rolled shut from the inside and sealed off floor by floor, so that even if part of the city fell, the rest could hold.
Consider what that meant to build.
Every one of those chambers was carved by hand from soft volcanic rock that cuts easily but collapses just as easily on anyone careless enough to misjudge it.
There were no machines. There was only patience and time and an enormous amount of labor working downward into the dark with hand tools and the certainty that a single mistake could bring the ceiling down.
And here is the part that changes the scale of it. Daring Kuyu is not alone.
Beneath Capidoshia, there are roughly 200 of these underground settlements.
Around 40 of them large enough to reach several levels deep. Some are not even separate. Darenu is joined to another underground city, Kaklu, by a tunnel running somewhere between 8 and 9 km through solid stone. A person could in theory walk from one hidden metropolis to another without ever surfacing. The suspicion among those who study the region is that this was not a scatter of isolated shelters at all, but something closer to a network, a whole underground world connected beneath the visible one.
The map of that world is still being drawn. As recently as the last decade, during construction work for a housing project in the town of Nevshi, crews broke into yet another vast complex, one that early surveys suggested might rival Daren Kuyu in size or even surpass it.
It had gone entirely unnoticed beneath a modern town, beneath the foundations of ordinary houses waiting. Which raises the obvious question, if a city large enough to hold 20,000 people could sit undetected until a man happened to swing a hammer in the wrong place, how much more is still down there, unrecorded and unmapped?
That is the strange thing about all of this. We can measure the depth, count the levels, catalog the wells and the doors and the presses. We can describe exactly what was built. What we cannot say with any confidence at all is who began it.
So who did begin it? For most of the people who study these cities, the answer is not a mystery at all. It has a name, a period, and a reasonable weight of evidence behind it. The Turkish Ministry of Culture dates the origins of Daren Kuyu to roughly 2,800 years ago and points to the Friians, an Iron Age people who settled central Anatolia in the 8th and 7th centuries before the common era. The Friians were known for their skill with rock, carving tombs and monuments and dwellings straight into the stone. And Capidoshia's soft volcanic tough would have been an obvious material for people already practiced in the work. In this account, they cut the earliest uppermost levels, the first floors of what would eventually become something far larger.
Some researchers reach back further still.
They suggest the very first chambers might belong to the Hittites, the great Bronze Age power that dominated this region around 4,000 years ago, carved perhaps as defensive burrows during the wars and upheavalss of their age. The evidence for that is thinner, and archaeologists are careful to say so, but it keeps the door open to an origin older than the Friians by a thousand years or more.
What is far less disputed is what happened later because here the record grows loud.
During the long struggle between the Byzantine Empire and the advancing Arab armies, roughly the years 780 to 1180, the Christian population of Capidosia drove these complexes downward and outward on a massive scale. They added chapels, a religious school, store rooms, inscriptions in Greek. They turned what may have started as modest cave shelters into deep multilevel refues capable of hiding an entire town.
When raiders came, the people went underground, rolled the stone doors shut, and waited them out in the dark.
It was during this period that Darren Kuyu likely came closest to holding those 20,000 people it was built to shelter. And that use did not end in some distant century. It continued on and off into living memory.
A Cambridge linguist named Richard Dawkins, working among the Greekeaking natives of the region in the early 1900s, recorded how when news arrived of massacres elsewhere, a great part of one town simply vanished below ground and did not dare sleep above it for nights on end. The cities were not relics to these people. They were a place to go when the world above turned dangerous.
Why underground at all?
The answer is practical and it recurs across every layer of this history.
Concealment first and above everything, a place invisible to any army marching overhead, but also comfort because the temperature below holds steady and moderate while the Capidosian winters bite and the summers scorch.
and storage because harvests keep longer in the cool dark safe from both weather and thieves. This is the version supported by artifacts, by inscriptions, by written history stretching from the Iron Age into the 20th century. It is coherent. It is evidenced. And for most scholars, it is enough. But a small number of researchers look at these same tunnels and argue that the first cut of the spade came thousands of years before any friian ever lifted a chisel. And it is here that the story splits in two.
The man who has pressed that argument hardest is a British writer and independent researcher named Andrew Collins. Someone who works outside the mainstream of academic archaeology and is not shy about saying so. Collins looks at the underground cities of Capidoshia and does not see the handiwork of the Iron Age at all. He sees something far older.
By his reckoning, the first chambers were cut not 2 or 3,000 years ago, but 11 or 12,000, reaching back into the late stone age, long before the Friians or the Hittites or anyone else the textbook's name. His case rests on a few threads pulled together. There is the sheer scale of the labor work. so vast and so patient that it seems to strain against the idea of a single Iron Age population.
There is the observation made by a local researcher named Omar Demir that extensive fields of rock chips and excavation debris around the cities appear far more ancient than the historical builders could account for.
And there is the underlying logic which Collins returns to again and again that the later inhabitants did not carve these cities from nothing. They expanded what was already there. They inherited a set of chambers cut by hands that had long since vanished and simply dug them deeper. Told that way, it is a genuinely compelling idea.
It carries the pull of every buried origin story. the sense that someone was here first, someone we have forgotten, someone whose only signature is the emptiness they left in the rock.
But an honest account has to turn the idea over and look at its underside. And here the deep time claim runs into serious trouble. This is a minority position and the mainstream of archaeology does not accept it. More than that, it collides with a single stubborn problem of method, one that no amount of enthusiasm can talk its way past.
You cannot put a date on an absence.
Think about what these cities actually are. They are not walls someone built up. They are space, someone carved out, rock removed and carried away and gone.
When archaeologists state a site, they date the things people leave behind. The charcoal from a fire, the seed in a storage pit, the fragment of pottery pressed into a floor. Every date recovered from these underground cities comes from what later occupants left inside the tunnels, not from the moment the very first chamber was opened.
The removal of stone leaves nothing to measure. It leaves only a shape in the ground. and a shape does not carry a date. So the earliest cut, the one that matters most to Colin's argument, is by its very nature almost impossible to pin down. The deep time claim cannot be firmly proven. But that same difficulty means it cannot be cleanly ruled out either. It sits in a frustrating middle space, unsupported by hard dates and unrefuted by them, resting instead on inference and instinct. Which leaves one question worth asking before we dismiss it. Not whether stone age people did carve these cities, but whether they could have. Whether human beings that far back possess the skill and the organization to attempt something on this scale at all. And to test that, we have to leave Capidoshia and travel more than 200 miles to the southeast.
What waits at the end of that journey is a hill near the city of San Leorfa and a discovery that forced archaeology to rethink some of its oldest assumptions.
The place is called Gobeci and in the year 1994, a German archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt recognized it for what it was. He would spend the next 20 years excavating it until his death in 2014. and what he pulled from the ground unsettled the field for good. Beneath the soil stood rings of great T-shaped pillars carved from limestone, some of them 5 1/2 m tall and weighing more than 10 tons a piece. Their faces were worked with animals, foxes and boores, snakes and vultures rendered in careful relief by people who clearly knew exactly what they were doing. And when the organic material around them was dated, the number stopped everyone cold.
The oldest layers reached back to roughly 9,600 years before the common era. That is around 11,600 years old. Older than Stonehenge by some 6,000 years. Older than the pyramids of Egypt by more still.
Here is what made it almost impossible to accept.
The people who raised these pillars had no pottery. They had no metal. They had not yet begun to farm. By every rule, the textbooks had defended for a century. Monumental building like this was supposed to come after agriculture, after settlement, after the slow accumulation of a surplus that freed some hands from the hunt. Farming first, the account went, and only then the temples. Gobeci tip reversed that order.
Here were hunter gatherers, people who lived by following wild herds and gathering wild plants, organizing themselves to quarry, carve, and raise 10 ton stones. And then around 8,000 years before the common era, for reasons no one can fully explain, they deliberately buried the whole thing, packing it with rubble and earth until it vanished beneath the hill. Nor does it stand alone. Gobeclete turns out to be one site among several part of a wider cluster archaeologists now call Tas Tempellar which includes places like Kahan Tepe scattered across the same region and even Gobeci itself has barely been opened. By most estimates only around 5% of it has been excavated.
The rest is still in the ground still waiting.
The reason all of this matters to a set of tunnels 200 miles away is simple and it is worth stating carefully so as not to overstate it. Gbecipe does not prove that anyone carved the underground cities of Capidoshia in the stone age.
It proves something narrower but still profound. It proves that people of that era, people without metal or farming or writing, were fully capable of organizing enormous coordinated works of stone. The old objection that such labor was simply beyond them no longer holds. The impossible has been made merely conceivable. And that shift changes the weight of the question. If stone age hands could raise Gobeclete, then the idea of stone age hands cutting the first chambers beneath Capidosia is no longer absurd on its face. It is only unproven. But some researchers go further than capability. They argue that Gobecley tipe records not just the skill to go underground, but the reason a catastrophe they say is written into the stone itself.
The catastrophe theory begins with a single pillar. Among the carved stones at Gobeclete stands one the excavators labeled pillar 43 and which the wider world came to know as the vulture stone crowded with birds and beasts and strange geometric marks. In 2017, two researchers from the University of Edinburgh, Martin Swatman and Demetrios Tuscritzis proposed a startling reading of it. It was important to note that they came not from the excavation team nor even from archaeology but from the university's school of engineering. In their interpretation, the animals on that pillar were not simply animals.
They were constellations, a coded star map. And the map recorded a specific date, a moment around 10,950 years before the common era when they argued a comet struck the earth. That impact in their telling was tied to something real and well documented. The younger Dus was a genuine climatic event, an abrupt plunge back into cold that began roughly 12,900 years ago and gripped the world for something like 13 centuries. And from that pairing, the pillar and the freeze, a whole story assembles itself with almost irresistible neatness. A comet strikes. The world turns suddenly.
brutally cold. A stone age society facing a winter that will not end does the only thing it can. It goes underground into chambers cut from the rock and waits out the long dark. When the cold finally lifts, the survivors emerge and raise Gobecepe to remember what they lived through. The underground cities and the temple in one clean ark.
It is a beautiful story and the people who know the site best do not believe it. The archaeologists who actually excavated Gobecepe answered the claim directly in a published response with the memorable title more than a vulture and their objections came hard. First, the younger dry impact itself. The idea that a comet caused that cooling at all is a disputed hypothesis contested among scientists and far from settled. To build a reading of the pillar on it is to rest one uncertain claim on top of another.
Second, and more damaging, the date does not fit. Sweatman's proposed moment for the pillar sits 700 to a,000 years earlier than the oldest radiocarbon date recovered from the very enclosure the pillar stands in. The stone by the physical evidence had not yet been carved when the comet was supposed to have been recorded on it. And third, there is the problem that troubles the whole method. Gobeci is covered in imagery, a dense and varied symbolic tradition running across dozens of pillars. To read one arrangement as a star map, you have to decide in advance which animals count as constellations and which do not. choosing the pieces that fit the pattern and setting the rest aside.
That is not decoding. That is selection.
The honest verdict is that the comet reading is a tidy story built on thin evidence. The kind of narrative that satisfies because it resolves everything at once, which is precisely the reason to distrust it. And when you strip the comet away, you are left exactly where you started. The underground cities still have no birth certificate. Their origin is still signed. So what in the end actually changes human history here?
Not the thing the headlines reach for?
Not a lost master race, not a comet written in stone. Not a forgotten people who dug a hundred cities and then evaporated without a trace. Strip those away and something real remains. And it is worth separating carefully from the noise. The thing that genuinely rewrote the human story is Gobec Lee itself and it did so quietly without any of the drama the other theories borrow. For a century archaeology held to a particular order of events. First people settled then they farmed. Then once agriculture had freed enough hands and gathered enough surplus they built monuments.
Gbeckley broke that sequence. Here were hunter gatherers raising 10-tonon pillars thousands of years before farming took hold. Which means the monument came first and the settled life came after. That is a genuine revolution in how we understand our own beginnings.
And unlike the comet and the lost civilization, it rests on solid dated ground. It is not a mystery. It is a fact that changed the field.
The underground cities are a harder case, and honesty demands that we leave them where the evidence actually leaves them, which is unresolved.
On one side stands the wellsupported account, the Friians and the Byzantines, the inscriptions and the chapels, the documented centuries of refuge stretching almost into living memory. On the other stands the deep time claim, evocative and unproven, arguing for stone age origins that no one has been able to confirm or fully rule out. And the reason we cannot choose cleanly between them is not carelessness or missing effort. It is built into the rock. You cannot date a space that was carved by taking stone away. The first cut leaves nothing behind to measure, only an emptiness. And emptiness keeps no calendar. That is an uncomfortable place to stand. And the temptation is to resolve it by force. To pick the answer that thrills more or the answer that reassures more. Both temptations should be resisted.
The truthful position is that we know a great deal about who used these cities and very little with any certainty about who first opened them. And there is more still in the dark than out of it. The deepest chambers of the underground cities remain unexavated. Whole complexes are still being found beneath modern towns, stumbled upon by construction crews and farmers rather than sought out.
Even Gobeci, the site that reset our sense of what early humans could do, has given up only around 5% of what it holds. The other 95% is still buried, still silent, still capable of surprising us. So, the sensible conclusion is not a triumphant one, and it should not pretend to be. What was found beneath Turkey does change human history, but not in the way the boldest theories claim. It changes it by proving that people we once underestimated were capable of far more than we allowed. And by reminding us that the record of our past is full of gaps we cannot yet read.
The map is still being drawn. The ground has not finished speaking. Perhaps the real lesson beneath Turkey is not a secret civilization at all, but something quieter and stranger.
So much of the human story is recorded not in what our ancestors left behind, but in what they took away. Negative space. Rock carried out and gone. The hardest kind of past to read because it hands you no charcoal to date, no bone to measure, only a shape in the ground and a silence. And the count keeps climbing. 200 cities and rising.
Nevshi still being mapped. Gobeci barely opened. The sledgehammer that broke through a basement wall in 1963 did not answer the question of who dug first. It only made the confident version of the timeline sound a little less certain.
And once a settled story begins to wobble, you start to wonder what else is still down there in the dark, holding its silence, keeping its answer just out of reach.
