US and Iran Sign Deal to Potentially End the War Amid G7 Summit
Added:President Trump on the world stage joining a summit on the shores of Lake Geneva and touting his new deal to end the US war with Iran.
>> We have our deal done with Iran.
And it should be successful.
>> Alongside key Gulf allies today, the president presenting his new agreement with Iran, yet to be released publicly, as a roadmap to peace in the Middle East.
>> The biggest thing is they will not have a nuclear weapon. And that's the reason I got in.
And that's the reason I agreed to sign.
>> Senior US officials say this memorandum of understanding with Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz immediately and ends the US blockade of Iranian ports, while also opening a 60-day window to negotiate further on Iran's nuclear program, including what happens to its highly enriched uranium buried after last summer's strikes. Vice President Vance speaking with NBC's Tom Llamas.
>> But the basic principle is Iran behaves like a normal country, they get treated like a normal country with great benefits and prosperity accruing to the whole region.
>> Those benefits could include relief from US sanctions and access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund created by Iran's Arab neighbors.
>> Not a single dime of that money comes from the United States and in order for Iran to get that benefit, they have to show the Gulf Arab states that they're behaving like a normal country.
>> While back >> here in Europe, the president facing pressure from allies to re-engage with the conflict on their doorstep and help end Russia's war with Ukraine, which as of last week has now gone on longer than the First World War. The president meeting privately with Ukraine's President Zelenskyy before today's official program began.
>> We had a very good meeting. Look, Russia should make a deal. Russia's lost tremendous amounts of people and so is Ukraine.
>> The president says he'll meet again with Zelenskyy later today to discuss the war effort there. As for the next steps on that Iran deal, the uh text will be released Friday, we expect, after a signing ceremony attended by Vice President Vance here in Switzerland.
That will mark the end of that conflict and start the more complicated talks on many of the issues that led to the war in the first place. Savannah.
>> And Garrett Haake, thank you very much.
